  • Dom Young officially released

    From the Roosters website:

The Sydney Roosters have today confirmed the immediate release of winger Dominic Young from his contract, allowing him to pursue an opportunity with another NRL club.

Roosters Head of Recruitment, Daniel Anderson, said: “Dom is a talented athlete and a great person. We thank Dom for his contributions to the Roosters and wish him all the best for the future.”

Player number 1229, Young joined the Roosters at the start of the 2024 season and featured in 31 NRL games over his time with the Tricolours.

Pity he didn’t work out really. He could be a truly great NRL winger if he could improve just a couple of key areas.

Thanks for the contribution Dom, and best of luck for your future (except when you play us).

Have to respect how amicably this has been handled by club and player.

I think I watched all of Dom Youngs NSW cup games bar maybe one and he was good in all, never sooked about his dropping and to his credit had a good game against the Knights.

Wish him good luck, a supreme athlete but just didn't seem to be developing some of his weaknesses at our club so think the club has made a good decision here.

I look forward to the multiple threads down the line every time he scores a bunch of tries questioning why we let him him go.

I think Dom actually played well against Newcastle which is a testament to his professionalism given the weird situation. Ironically his defence was quite solid and he stayed on his man, making it hard for them to make any space out wide.

Bittersweet for me as I don’t think he was as bad as a lot of people say. He has Xfactor that you can’t coach. I think his issues can be coached out of him, that being yardage carries and his defence. I also think with Toia in Origin squad and Billy Smith injury history we’ll be skinny if anyone is unavailable. Would’ve liked DY to see out the season for depth.

On the plus side, Marky is a much better player overall and I really like the faith shown in academy players Billy and Toia from the coach, so DY is the one to make way and it’s justified.

Mixed feelings about this as you know when he is on he can be a gamebreaker. Unfortunately when he is off his game, it can be a total trainwreck. To his credit he had a red hot go on Saturday night and turned in a solid performance. Had he played more like he did against the Knights on a regular basis, I doubt we would be letting him go.

Not sure what happened to Dom this season, it was almost like as soon as he had some pressure for his position he wanted out. With the injury record of Billy and Rob he might have stuck around. Tupou has another year to go, but he is no guarantee to keep his spot for that long.

I wonder who will replace him in round 18 against the Tigers?

Sad to see him go. The equation for him to make the nrl side was always going to be difficult once Marky Mark was signed, but has been a big asset during Origin. He was one of our best players against Newcastle. Would have liked to see him stay til the end of the year. Agree he can have that X factor and can be a strong finisher.

Given his price tag, I suppose he became surplus to our needs and upcoming talent

That might be true, but I'm getting sick of Easts signing players then dismissing them or allowing them to leave when things don't work out.

Stop buying garbage from other teams and instead focus on brighter, young prospects instead.

I’d say either Ethan King or Tom Rodwell? I’ve noticed they’ve been in the extended squad most weeks. I think Junior Pauga has been out injured long term but someone more in the know would be able to confirm that.

A good finisher when given open space to turn on the jets but a terrible defender and this year he didn't seem interested in taking the hard carries, Young is the poster boy for the "speed is all you need" crowd

Seems like a cool dude, but I'm happy that he's gone if I'm honest. I was really stoked when we signed him, and expected him to really kick on. Considering we are a team prone to brain explosions, being the most brain-explosion-happy player in the team was somewhat impressive.

I hope he kills it at Newcastle, as he is good to watch. Wish him all the best, but definitely think this was the right move.

I thought he was good for us last year. Who else was there to replace him inhouse?

If it wasn't for Marky coming good then Dom would still be our next best option. Now it is Tom Rodwell who is unknown at NRL and after that there is not much to give you great confidence.

He was a good buy at the time but Marky has clearly overtaken him and at the price it is the right thing to move him on. And remember we didn't approach the Knights. They approached us.

Good luck to him. I hope he scores plenty of tries to keep King happy.

Junior Pauga has been out a long time, and I doubt he will be back any time soon after reading the update today. I wonder where Tyreece Tait is at as he looks like Tupou's long term replacement. Ethan King might get the gig, but I thought he struggled in his debut making ground and I'm not sure Tom Rodwell is in the top 30.

With so much salary cap available we had the opportunity to buy more than we needed, keep the best, and get rid of the surplus.

We should have at least kept him until the end of the season.

Let’s prey we don’t get decimated in the outside backs from now till Sep-Oct.
