SBW, or his management, were never quoted saying that he wanted to go back to Rugby for the World Cup. It was only a newspaper article with a quote from the President of the NZRU saying that Sonny would be welcome back to Rugby if he did end up going to League. That's all it was.
It might end up being true but it's definitely not true just because some journo wrote it.
I believe (and it may be just hope) that what could entice Sonny to a longer-then-one-year deal with the Roosters, or to the NRL to a lesser extent, is the potential to ensure an after-sport career for himself, say in t.v with channel nine. The opportunities in NZ, which is a smaller market, are not as good in this regard. I have no doubt that if he does come to the Chooks there will also be a job for him at Nine.
If he continues to box while playing footy, and maybe has one or two fights a year? So what! As long as he turns up for footy training it doesn't matter to me. It keeps him fit, he's a heavyweight so he doesn't have to drop weight and he fights muppets so he probably wont get injured (although this is a possibility, broken hands and so on) As far as I'm concerned it's not such a bad way to spend his spare time away from footy compared to drinking piss at the pub or hanging out at the TAB.
If he does come to us it will be a circus that the club, players and fans will just have to deal with. I believe though that club is not that stupid just to roll over and honour all of SBW's so called demands. What ever agreement is made it will be to the benefit of both parties.
In saying all that, I hope he doesn't just sign for 1 year

This is harkening back to the stupidity of Martin Offiah blowing in for the year back in the 90s and him doing his shoulder in the first game.
This cove gets on the field next year and blows his ACL in the first five minutes, we've still got to pay him.
No player is worth the risk, the money or the hassle.
The club fought like hell to get rid of the transit lounge tag and now they're willingly restarting that crap.

Your right, it is all hear say at the moment and i guess we should all find out soon. I just pray that our club does not sign him just for one year. Can you imagine the laughing stock we would be if he plays japenese rugby then comes to us and plays a few games before going overseas for a fight and getting injured and then being out for the season for us.... He could then sign back with NZ rugby having played only a few games of league and laughing all the way to the bank with everyone laughing at our club, it could be a disaster.
Surely the club bosses have thought all this through and covered all bases, if not they have lost the plot.I hope that it turns out to be a great signing for the roosters and rugby league. He needs to be here for years not a year otherwise it is a money grab circus. A 3 year deal would be huge for the club and the x factor the side needs.

One year because he has a commitment for a Japanese Rugby Deal for 12 weeks or less if they don't make the finals, and he had alreayd agreed a while ago for a Fight in South Africa in which he will pocket around $2m next year.
However if he gets hurt in either of those events and signs a 3 year deal with us, the Roosters will be foreced to cover the costs both for his rehab and lost in profits with him on the sidelines. That way we keep ourselves clear of those we save the costs just incase.
After the Fight in South Africa then you can guarantee he will sign a further 3 years most likely worth $800,000 a season with the new TV Deal.
This could be the reason

Chook & Ben25 are right - it could be a massive circus. Imagine he gets injured early on - out for the season. That leaves us with about one quarter of our salary cap sitting on the sideline for the year. If the club is going to sign him for one year, which is ludicrous, then they must protect themselves about him having to play a minumum number of games before he gets paid, say two thirds of the season etc. If the reports are correct I just think its all madness & we will again be the laughing stock. Thanks very much "management".....
