    > While many saw it simply as a case of the Roosters and one of rugby league's great larrikins having a laugh, others considered it tone deaf...

I think everybody except for this opinions columnist is of the opinion that he was being a larrikin. Why should he have to apologise to some random columnist who has in no way been impacted?

Next you'll find that Rads has apologised and he's doing an Ezra Maaam, like 'applogy not accepted!!! Leave me alone... deep harm has already been done and your career should be ended over this!!!'

I don’t think it’s a matter of being woke or not woke. It’s like saying cigarettes causing cancer and the ads behind that are woke. It’s not, it’s an advancement of medical science. Concussions are serious and as we now know more about them, they get less of a stigma attached to them than they used to.

That being said, how is the post condoning or making light of concussions? It’s clearly a lighthearted joke for a tribute for a bloke who has been a warrior of our club. We lead by our actions and how we deal with concussions, which in my opinion we are the best in game.

Muckraking at its finest. A total non-story.

I don’t think anyone with even an ounce of common sense would’ve seen that post and taken it as a sign of condoning concussions. Most would’ve seen it for what it was, humour amongst some friends. A joke does not define one persons’s stance on a topic, actions do and the club have been consistent with their intent and actions around concussion, they don’t owe this guy an apology or an explanation.
        Very well said.

For you lot saying it’s tone deaf considering the current issues around concussions… look at it from the other side and thank the club for raising awareness of the issue.

Imagine if we all just turned a blind eye to the problem hey?

The Roosters are the club that’s lead from the front as far as promoting the dangers of concussions. We’ve stood down players for up to 6 weeks at a time to protect their health and well being. We’ve done more than any other NRL club.

Problem is MR, just like the roosters stance in not lying down for penalties, no other fans, or the NRL gives a shit.

nobody recognises these facts except for us. If he didn’t put the concussion joke in there, they would have picked on him for the amount of beers number.

seems like you just can’t do a joke anymore without upsetting people these days.

                  Just crybullies at it again.

On another, more interesting note, has anyone noticed how much better the Roosters social media presence has been this year? In years gone by it has been woeful but they're putting in some humour now and again, and almost daily posting really high quality images and sometimes little pranks and stuff. Really good to see. I'd love to see a pre-season documentary next year. Quite a few other clubs do it.

Can’t disagree with any of that. It’s the media though isn’t it? Always looking for clicks. Always looking to drum up drama and scandal.

IMO calling shyte 'woke' has become a meaningless label, used by right-wingers to describe anything that's too progressive / modern for their thinking. It comes from black slaves speaking up against racism, so being woke is not a bad thing. It just means speaking up about injustice... which ironically right wingers are all too happy to do when THEY have an issue (e.g. they wanna speak against climate change action, reconciliation, COVID vaccines, transgender rights, abortion...etc).

If 'woke' actually means 'complaining about absolute bullshyte' then right wingers have a permanent lease over being 'woke' as they're an extremely outspoken group of perpetual whingers.

For Rads... I think the media's simply trying to create outrage over nothing. Sure beers and concussions aren't something we want kids to be seeing as the upshot of footy. However, does anybody truely believe that's what he was saying?

I do a bit of that stuff myself, and had visions a few years ago of reaching out to the Roosters about it - it used to be dreadful.

If you're in contact with the fella doing some of the work, give him props from me. It has been great.

it was dumb to post it on the club's insta account. the tee shirt was an in joke and isn't indicative of the club's approach to concussions

Let's be realistic, it wasn't the cleverest post.

The club can't place itself as one of the best at managing players with concussion, and then post things on social media boasting how many concussions a player has had.

It's a serious issue, and definitely not "woke". And to say things like "players today wouldn't have survived playing in the 70s or 80s" is laughable. We are simply now more aware of the potential ramifications of multiple concussions.

I know a former park footy player that is battling with neurological issues at a fairly young age. This person had quite a few concussions including when playing footy as a kid. Whether it's related or not I don't know but its coming out more and more with former players.
