They were the days in the 90s. The Bayeh brothers sold the coke, you could get a capsule of very good gear for $60. The Piccolo Bar where you can have a coffee and a meal and buy pot and smoke a joint, I seethe legend owner Silvio passed away only a few weeks ago aged in his late 80s. The pizza shops had a price war going on who would give 3 slices for $1, and who would sell or 4 slices for $1. Then someone went to $0.80c
Maybe Bates was up at the Swans club and the Rex during the day, then the Bourbon and the excellent Barons at night. Or Mansions. Right across the road from the Bourbon across from the fountain was the Test Tube Factory, where you'd buy shots served in test tubes, you'd buy 4 or 8 at a time served upright in test tubes in a wooden rack. Great place. Every 20 mins or so they'd come and put out all these plates of tomato sauce and pasta. No one had ordered them and no-one ate them, it was just to be seen to be complying with the liquor licence laws if the inspectors turned up. That may have been Bates???? One of the inspectors??? Used to be fantastic cheap Korean place right across from the Bourbon, and back behind the Bourbon and back a little towards Bayswater Road had this amazing Thai place, the Lime & Lemon Grass.
