  • Eligibility question

With DLS Va'a being seriously ill earlier in the year, where I believe he lost a lot of weight and will have a lengthy recovery, where can he play when he's ready to return to the field?

Still only 19yo until August, but as a top 30 player is he restricted from playing junior reps? I thought perhaps he might come back through Flegg to rebuild his fitness and confidence, and progress from there, but can he? Or does he have to come back via NSW Cup because he's in our top squad?

dunno. and don't know what his path to full fitness is once he's back in training. the standard is reserves is higher and i'd throw him in there. better to play v men. if necessary his first stint could be short

Maybe his uncle can update us on how he is progressing with his illness.
Wishing the big fella a full and speedy recovery.

I just dont think the Va'a brothers will make it as top line middle forwards.
Im not saying they wont make first grade but I just dont think either of them will be hard arse tough aggressive middles.

Yes there is nothing preventing him from playing Jersey Flegg, although I would be surprised if we see him again this year. Reports were of a 6-12 month recovery period.

That being so, I wonder if it turns out to be a blessing in disguise. He is still so young to play in one of the toughest positions in one of the toughest sports in the world. Even though he's probably a very ambitious young man and would hate to be missing out on playing, perhaps a year off will allow his body to harden and will end up being a good thing for him. Fingers crossed he's doing well.

Thanks R6, I had a quick look on the NSWRL website but info was not obvious to find.

All the more reason to ease him back in gently IMO.

Regardless of eligibility I don't think he'd get any value outta playing with kids. He's either fit enough for the rigours of playing footy or he's not.

I get that it's a contact sport but as a sub-elite marathon runner, I have nothing to gain by flogging my mates during a weekend jog. Various running clubs around town have had to tell me 'you CAN come and train with us... but you'll be too fast, so probably won't get much out of our coaching'. He'd be like that but x 100 I'd say. It might even be a safety/insurance risk.

Right now my understanding is it that he could die if he played a contact sport in his current state. My thoughts are all about his health/welfare rather than his physical conditioning (which will come with time).

I can’t see how a year off could be anything but a negative. He could have had 10 plus games of first grade experience this year.

NRL players require approval from the NSWRL to play Jersey Flegg and also need to be 21 or under when the comp is played in any given year ( December 31 of that year)

Jersey Flegg has no salary cap but of course the players won't be on big contracts as the focus is on developing players skills to progress to NSW Cup/NRL.
