If there was a younger option just as good as DCE I'd be all for signing him but unfortunately there are no great halves available to sign for the foreseeable future, lots of options for backline players though.
That's because there's a shortage in NRL standard halves and the money is too good to resist.

A halves life expectancy and market value would significantly decrease if they were as abundant as outside backs.

    • Tupou has been the games best winger for 10 years (shared at times with Brett Morris). Not necessarily the best at any given moment, but across his entire career, only Morris is comparable.

He’s also having a terrific year. The idea of dropping him for Manu right now is quite bizarre.

Mickie, I think I share the sentiment of the w

management must have bloody rocks in their heads if they sign/have signed DCE.
Surely we have faith in our young guns???

Linford Christie won an Olympic gold medal at 33yrs age and a world championship at 34. Toups has got a couple of years left in him imo.

For sure but we've seen more halves dominate in their mid thirties as opposed to backs or forwards, perhaps that's because of what you're saying, perhaps that's because they can avoid things that are more taxing on the body, we don't really know.

Linford Christie was a sprinter and not a winger though. Big difference between preparing the body for a 100m sprint as opposed to 80 minutes of football week in and week out.

IMO more to do with coach realisation that experienced halves are better at game management.

              • Toups is still one of our biggest metre eaters, still one of the best under the high ball in defence and attack, still a great finisher and a great combo with Billy. This talk of him being replaced by Manu is idiotic.

Game management is only a small part of the equation. Look at Townsend for example! Halves still need to be fast, sharp, athletic, willing, resilient etc.

But DCE at 37 is okay - you could argue with yourself!

                      • Manu would be the ideal candidate for fullback when Teddy hangs up the boots. In fact we should move mountains to get him back when that time comes. He knows the system and has played out of his skin when given that role.

Young not playing NSW Cup today so looks like he will be put in cotton wool till he joins the Knights so there is no risk of injury killing the deal.

Different position, I already spoke on that, read the thread.

The biggest ones would be Ben Hunt and DCE who made the top 10 in the Dally M player of the year last year in their mid thirties and were both nominated for halfback of the year also, Adam Reynolds has had some phenomenal games in his mid thirties and was runner up in a grand final, I believe Cody Walker played Origin in his mid thirties and played well enough to pick up a man of the match as well.

He wouldn’t be playing because he is on the extended bench for today though wouldn’t he?

Yeah that's what I thought too but Ethan King has been named 18th man.
