Very sad news, he was a great half back and player. I remember seeing up at the Evans Head newsagent about 15 years ago.

      So sad.
Part of the mighty Roosters side of the 70’s, and arguably the greatest Roosters team ever.
      Never to be forgotten….

He was made a life member of the club earlier this year.
        Very fitting honour.

One of my fave all time Roosters. What Cooper Cronk did winning 3 comps in a row with 2 different teams in 2017-19, Johnny Mayes did 40 years earlier with Manly in 73 and Roosters in 74-75. People talk about Terry Lamb as being the best ever 'backer upper' in the game, again Mayes was doing that a decade before him.
Just to show how valuable he was to the premiership winning roosters in 74/75, just see how much he features in the 75 highlights package Sydney Roosters 1975 So glad the club bestowed the Life Member honour to him earlier this year.

I was taken to watch the Chooks with my dad my pop & my brother from a very young age so it was in the year 1970 when I first started attending games, I was 3 years old so I didnt really watch the games but I have memories of watching the Roosters when I was 6 so it was 1973 by then & I was playing footy myself & I played halfback & Johnny Mayes was the Roosters halfback so he was my favorite player, he was my first favorite player & I was lucky enough to meet him a few times with my dad, pop & brother in the dressing sheds after Roosters games. My little Roosters jumper had number 7 on the back & he signed my autograph book which I still have.
Im saddened to hear that he doesnt have long to live but he will always be in my memory,
              God bless you Monkey Mayes

Mayes return to Easts in 74 from Manly coincided with Peards return from St George. What a combo they were.

Mickie did u have a Manly jersey in 73 for when Mayes was playing for them? Just teasing as it’s some time ago. Our 73 halfback was Paddo boy Kevin Junee.

Awful news to hear. He was long before my time but for 20 odd years on various iterations of Roosters message boards I've read the stories and fondness for him by the fans who witnessed that golden 70s team he sounds like a real fan favourite of that era.

I started my journey as a Roosters supporter in the early '70's, and the premierships in '74 and '75 are among my earliest memories of watching football with more than just a passing interest (no pun intended). It was such a joy to watch that side play, and Johnny Mayes was integral to their success. A skillful and tenacious competitor. Fond memories indeed.

My thoughts are with him and his family.

Very sad news. Johnny Mayes was a little bit before my time as a Roosters supporter. But I have a copy of the 1975 grand final and he was indeed a Roosters legend. My thoughts are with him and his loved ones.
