Smith pleased with elements of loss (i.e. I want some of whatever Smith's been smoking!!!)

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith believes his troops aren’t too far away from competing with the top NRL sides after their 52-14 loss to the Sea Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Click here for a full Match Report.

Speaking after the match, Smith conceded the Sea Eagles were too good on the day, but felt his men are still improving.

“I thought the game was kind of strange for us,” Smith said. I thought we were great physically in the early part of the game. We put some great hits on, but unfortunately some poor communication meant we just couldn’t stay with them.

“We looked good at times out there, I thought there were some promising aspects today, our problem was that we couldn’t maintain it.

“I wouldn’t mind another crack at them in a few weeks. We are an ever improving side, there’s a gap at the moment, but it’s definitely closing.”

One man who certainly impressed the Roosters coach was interchange Mose Masoe, who caused constant headaches for the Sea Eagles defence with his powerful running.

“Mose’s run off the kick-off was sensational. I haven’t seen someone open up a defence of Manly’s standard like that in a long time.

“It was a high quality play from a high quality player. However, as is the story with us, in the same play Mose lost the ball. There was no doubt it was good work by Watmough, but still, we need to learn to take advantage of situations like that.”

Smith also gave high accolades to his opposition, saying that the Sea Eagles performance was amongst the best he’s seen this season.

“Manly were exceptional today, I didn’t think we were too bad, they just played great football, their execution was excellent - that’s where we need to be.”

    Next Up:
In Round 18 the Sydney Roosters travel to Toyota Stadium to face the Sharks on Monday July 9 with kick-off at 7:00pm, after the bye in Round 17.

    ---

    My take...
    1) Manly were clearly the better team, but they weren't exceptional... we were just atrocious. Not to sound too disrespectful of what was clearly a superior turnout by Manly on the day...Manly's game was error/penalty ridden, and most of their tries were either soft or lucky (like the 3rd or 4th where they kicked it and the ball bounced back towards them, leading to a try. Great kick, all due respect... but they were nothing more than a solid working class club tonight. No real signs of flare/brilliance... just commitment against a sloppy bunch of amateurs who lacked training, preparation, attitude and grit.)

    2) We had one period of about 10 minutes where we scored 3 tries. This was the ONLY positive and as soon as our momentum was broken we simple packed up and went home (I know I did with 20 minutes to go.) No attempt to keep defending, play for the fans (like me who drove down from Canberra to see them get smashed!!! FARK YOU FOR WASTING MY TIME ROOSTERS!!!! I DON'T MIND US LOSING, BUT WE DIDN'T SHOW ANY PRIDE!!!!)

    3) DCE was injured (after I left) and could be out for a few weeks. Is that a positive? Not really... we gained nothing and he'll probably be back on the field soon anyway so it's not as if we wrecked their season.

    4) Every week we field a team that only has 1 rep player (who agree or not, many would argue isn't really rep quality.) You simply can't field a team of young blokes against teams with 5+ rep quality players and expect to be competitive.

    5) The biggest positive for me tonight is that we're now 1 less game away from the end of the season. COULDN'T COME SOONER!!!!

I walked with about 20 minutes to go because the club that I'm a member of, and drove 3.5 hours to see on a Sunday night failed to turn up and play. WHY WOULD ANYBODY BOTHER TO WATCH THIS $HIT?!?!?!?

Is Brian Smith the stupidest person that's ever drawn breath or is he psychotic?

Hello Jason Taylor, time to get ready as the FG team needs you to take over as coach for I fear the lunatics are currently running the asylum.

The only thing even remotely positive coming out of this game, was that Moga was seemingly looking more comfortable in the top grade, and with that growing confidence is becoming more involved and showing us what he is capable of.

                  Other than that ......... ??

Brian Smith has lost his marbles. Its really time for him to step aside.

The team needs another coach with some fresh ideas and to add some steel in defence. Mininum this season should be making the top eight and they're not going to. Management need to act.

look we all knew this year was going to be a long one. Smith has one eye on next year -how can you coach a team when there are guys playing who you don't want there.

This year is about giving experience to our young guys, which is why I would like to see RTS at some stage, in preparation for when the cavalry arrive next season.

Does RTS deserve or need to debut into such a losing team? Better to save him for when our team contains a few players that want and are able to play.

I don't understand why people are calling for Jason Taylor to coach the first grade side. He may be a reasonable U20s coach but his last effort at coaching a first grade side was very poor to say the least. Has his coaching improved that much since his last effort? Theres a big difference in coaching U20s and first grade.
