  • Sheck @ 1 for the Jets, plays great!

Hopefully this means Sheck will be @ 1 for the Roosters sooner than expected!

competition points when they lost 20-14 to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the VB NSW Cup match played at a very wet and slushy Henson Park last Saturday.

The two teams were locked up at 10-all at halftime and Newtown led 14-10 midway through the second half, but the Sharks employed the smarter wet weather tactics on the day and deserved their win.

The Jets began the match confidently and fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, on debut from the Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup squad, began the Newtown phase of his career in the best possible way by scoring a try in the 8th minute. The Sharks seized the lead when the Jets failed to defuse a high kick, and increased this lead to 10-4 when they exploited some shoddy defence in Newtown’s quarter.

Jets front-rower Andrew Pearn scored when he ran onto a slick pass from halfback Mark Kheirallah, and Kheirallah’s conversion made it 10-all, the eventual halftime score. Newtown second-rower Brad Takairangi suffered concussion late in the first half and did not retake the field after the break.

The match was a stirring contest in the third quarter of the match as both sides tried to force errors from their opponents and to make the other side play the game in their own territory. Cronulla’s superior kicking game proved to be a decisive factor, although it was a pinpoint high kick by Mark Kheirallah that was well caught by winger Daniel Tupou, who scored a try to give Newtown a 14-10 lead.

The Sharks imposed repeat goal-line drop-outs by Newtown and the weight of possession and favourable field position finally told, when Cronulla scored in the left-side southern corner and converted the try from the sideline.

Newtown’s game fell away in the final twenty minutes as they failed to complete their sets and get to the kick, and were condemned to having to defend grimly at their end of the field. The Sharks ensured their win when they scored again just before fulltime to extend the lead to 20-14. Jets head coach Greg Matterson summed up the game by saying that the Sharks had used the better tactics in the wet conditions and had kicked more effectively to pin Newtown down in their own quarter.

The Jets had missed too many tackles and Cronulla forced about 8 goal-line drop-outs on Newtown over the course of the game.

The wet and wintry conditions had put the spotlight on Newtown’s forwards and the best performers were the ever-reliable Tinirau Arona, Andrew Pearn, Tom Symonds, Kurt Kara and Ahmad Ellaz. Team captain Khalid Deeb also worked hard but suffered a recurrence of a previous knee injury. Fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck made an impressive first-up appearance in the VB NSW Cup.

The Newtown Jets travel to Lidcombe Oval next Saturday (23rd June) to play the third-placed Canterbury-Bankstown at 3.00pm. The loss to the Sharks leaves the Jets in 4th position on the competition table but with six teams very close behind them.

It's always been the way though. The success of the 20s team is never prioritised above individual player development into first grade. I like the way they use the NYC. I think Jason Taylor's work is still very underrated. Last week he was missing the team's major attacking weapon and they racked up 40 on the team coming first i think. It's unfortunate that Lloyd Perrett is likely leaving for the Bulldogs mid season because he would have slotted into the team very nicely in place of Napa. The players know there role and generally execute it very well no matter who is missing. When Tago gets back he will go through the same process. You have to remember at the start of the season he was probably ahead of Evans in the cue for first grade. His body was probably a bit more ready for first grade as a prop. And he impressed big time in the Dogs trial. Even in the games he played between lay-offs his efforts were enormous and he looked like he was in another league like Evans. He, Evans and Napa all have first grader written all over them and they are all very different style front rowers. Masoe will not last long once Tago hits grade. Don't know about you guys but i'll be making my first trip out to Lidcombe oval this saturday to support the Bluebags and check out how these kids handle themselves against men. I really hope Napa looks as psychotic in NSW cup as he does in NYC. He's JWH in a pasty ranga's body.

              Anyone know how Cherro went?

Survived without injury I'm assuming....much game time....any impact at all?

I don't think it is just Jason Taylor I think it is the system the club has put in place as the stepping stones to gaining a run in FG. With these processes in place players will automatically lift their performances so they can be the next to move through the system.

                    Well said mate.

Smiff gets belted on the forums but he has to get some credit here cos this is what he was paid to do, put systems in place so our youngsters can progress to 1st grade, which is happening. Even their use of Pootown has been impressive, giving kids a few weeks to show they can cut it against men, then getting a go in the top grade.

The way I see it, we have a lot of kids who are talented, maybe too good for the 20s comp, but that step to 1st grade isn't easy as the ones who are there now are discovering. But you have to move them thru eventually and it's been one of the biggest problems at the club in past years, the progression thru the grades. IMO it's one of the better things Smiff and Co have done, made that path to 1st grade more achievable for our talented kids.

                    You know it makes sense.

its really a shame that the jets and the 20s have to suffer because of the possibility we are losing 2 players. sam and antmich. we have a $151 to 1 chance of winning a gf. jets are 4th and the 20s are 7 but a big win v mandy- 265 points will elevate them to 2 or 3rd.

i know we have to develope the youth policy but when do we also weigh up finals teams verse development. if the roosters are 11th with 3 weeks to go do you go hard to make the finals and sacrafice the other 2 teams of the top 4 position.

we have never worried about the ladder position in NYC, if players are being readied for first grade they will be promoted to Newtown much like Moga/RTS/Evans and now Napa, also the club doesn't hesitate resting NYC players to ease the workload a bit even when they are not injured.
