Confirmed: Oldfield to Roosters for 2 yrs from 2013

Sydney Roosters have secured the services of young utility back Michael Oldfield.

Oldfield will join the Roosters from the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on a two-year deal commencing in 2013.

Roosters recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan believes 21-year old Oldfield will be a valuable asset to the club.

“2012 has been a breakthrough year for Michael. He is one of the fastest runners of the ball in the NRL. Standing at an athletic 6”2, he is one of the best catchers in the game under the high ball and has scored 12 tries in just 22 NRL games, including a hat-trick a few weeks ago,” said O’Sullivan.

“Michael has played fullback, wing and centre and gives us great depth and coverage across the backline. We see him taking his game to the next level as a member of the young squad developing together here at the Roosters and we look forward to welcoming him to the club in 2013.”

Oldfield, who is currently enrolled at university where he is undertaking a business degree, will be reunited with former teammates Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Lama Tasi.

He obviously has a pretty good try scoring record, as stated above but i honestly always thought he looked a bit average on the field. Definitely fast though. I will be cheering for him none-the-less in the RWB jersey

I'm starting to come around to this signing, I had no idea he was only 21, for some reason I thought he was some journey man, who only ever played FG to cover for injuries, 6'2 & fast at 95kgs will be very nice for a change, how's his defence?

With Maloney, Moga, Oldfield, and potentially RTS coming into our backline, we will have something that we lost when Carney, Graham and Linnett left - PACE in the backline!

If RTS comes into the fullback position next year and Minichiello shifts to the wing as expected, then we will most likely see:

A quick backline, with a faster five-eighth, a mobile and line-breaking backrow, and a set of four massive props (Kennedy, Hargreaves, and two of Mose, Tasi and Evans) alongside a large and aggressive impact backrower (Taka or FPN). Pearce will be able to flourish.

If SBW does come we can keep Mini at fullback, Moga wing Oldfield wing SBW and Skd at centres, Leilua to bench.
It amazes me with the amount of depth we have especially in the forwards

He'll be lucky to get a start with SKD, Moga, BJ and mini/RTS all ahead of him for an outside back spot.

BJ deserves the centre spot ahead of Moga for next year. I think Moga needs a few years on the wing ala Folau outside of SKD or BJ.

BJ is only 20 (I think) and has already been called up to the Origin squad while Moga has yet to prove himself.

Our best backline next year would be

1. Mini (give RTS another year of development unless he is demanding a spot)
2. Moga
3. BJ
4. SKD
5. Oldfield

Now that is something to be excited about especially with a great half combination (hopefully) and possibly the most dominant forward pack in the NRL. Throw in SBW and we have a world class match winner that will inspire the younger guys an give them confidence and we are contenders.

Well done Smith and POS, they are building a formidable, young squad that has the potential to dominate for years.
