  • 1974 Grand Final Extended Highlights

Along with the JWH milestone, this week is also the 50th anniversary celebration of our 1974 GF win against Canterbury. The club has released an extended highlights package of the game, which is well worth a look. It's fun to watch a game played under the old rules of the day, with contested scrums, scrum penalties galore and tackles that would not be tolerated in today's game the norm. Marvel at the support play of these Easts legends, and the athleticism of some of the forwards, which is often considered a modern day trait and not assigned to those of yesteryear.

    Enjoy:

odd the club has said this week marks that anniversary but doesn't matter. the game wiped the memory of the 72 loss and for older fans must have been as satisfying as the 2002 premiership was after so long in the wilderness. and yeah, watching highlights brings home how much the game has changed

50 year anniversary of the referees hating on Easts.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Yep, 14-7 penalty count yet we flogged em.

I watched this game live on ABC TV as a little kid. I was so nervous my mum gave me a valium. But I remember it all!

I was actually at Canterbury ice skating rink with my older brother & some of his mates. I had just turned 12. I gave a cheer when they announced the score over the PA, and I nearly got beaten up by the locals.

We couldn't see what happened to John Brass being on the other side of the ground - only seen him from the waist up being escorted from the field by trainer Alf Richards.

Only saw what happened on the replay when we got home - concussion

Interesting watching old games like this. You can see that they are happy to throw a speculator because a knock on resulted in a scrum which was a legitimate contest back then, especially if you had a good ball winning hooker. I had an old book when I was a kid called Inside Rugby League. It was the biography of former Saints and Australian hooker Ian Walsh. I remember him saying that in the big games he would deliberately allow the opposition hooker to win scrums he didn't deem important because if he was too dominant in the scrums the refs would start blowing penalties.

The match winning try was such a typical Mark Harris blockbuster. He had no right to score from where he received the ball, surrounded by defenders. Pure pace and brute strength.

That makes us the same age - I'd turned 12 that August.

I had always remembered that GF as one of the great ref stitch ups by Keith Page - but looking at highlights in recent years it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, although we had no luck. And Manly were a better side that year.
