Roosters veteran Daniel Tupou is set to be given a 12-month extension with the parties kick-starting negotiations as he eyes a 14th season in the top grade.

While a host of experienced players including Luke Keary, Joey Manu and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves will leave the club at season’s end, the Roosters are likely to give Tupou another year as the winger shows no sign of slowing down.

He will enter next season as the only surviving member of Trent Robinson’s 2013 premiership winning side which was also Robinson’s first season in charge. In recent years the likes of club legends Boyd Cordner, Jake Friend and Mitch Aubusson have all retired leaving Tupou as the club’s most experienced player heading into next season.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirmed the club had begun talks about extending Tupou’s deal.

“We’ve definitely had some discussions,‘’ Robinson said. “He’s one of ours ‘Toops’ so we’re making sure we guide him in the right way, whether it’s here or overseas.

“I think that will get worked out in the next couple of weeks.‘’

the bad news is that it's only for 12 more months but nah, great news. such a quality about toops's game in recent years. a serious candidate for our greatest winger of all time.

makes next year's team look pretty competitive

He just needs one more try to beat his own record!

I think it would be more surprising that a current wallaby would take a 500k pay check to play reserve grade in the NRL

I get the point about the transition & it will take him a bit to get use to the differences, speed etc but a full pre-season, a few trials & I think he’ll get no it & suprise. I see him as being ahead of Smith already & we didn’t convert a guy across to us to play him in ressies when he could get $800k plus a year & be playing world cups . He’s faster than our current outside backs, has a higher leap that probably even JS & had a great step, fend & a good defensive hit. I think he plays 15+ games next year & would be far ahead of Murphy, Young #2, Toia & Smith.

Cheap considering he’s a Wallaby & better Rugby player than JS so could have seen $800k plus in Union for next deal.

Exactly this. Bloke was the next big thing in Union, playing for the Wallabies & they were blindsided & stunned to lose him. He was already established & would have played the next WC & received the $800k plus a year deal, so he didn’t leave to throw that away & play ressies. He’s starting 1st grade & will be a lock week in week out once he finds his feet.

$500k is an average nrl wage these days
he is a great athlete and coming to play 1st grade
                        way better then Suaali
Marky n will play first grade and well
Suaali is on $750k and not much better then a res grader
gees union will be disappointed with what they are getting

I really don't understand why Tupou seems to have to beg for the scraps when he's been one of the premium wingers the last 5 years

The thought of gagai joining us meant not getting toops for another year made me vomit in my mouth lil bit

Cheap if he's in the 17. Overs if he's purely for depth. Outside backs that are purely in the squad for depth shouldn't take such a chunk out of your salary cap.
