  • Dally M is a rubbish award

Just want to have this thread here so I can bump it every time this award comes up in discussion.

Not only do I think a 3-2-1 system is fundamentally flawed but some of the judges of this award are completely useless. I don't mean all because I do respect those who watch and understand the game but I may just disagree with... I mean genuinely don't think they watch the games or have the required knowledge of the game to be judging.

As seen in our Round 1 game Adam Reynolds has been awarded 1 point and Joey Manu 0 points.

There is no way anyone who knows what they are talking about watched that game and thought Adam Reynolds was the 3rd best player on the field. His kicking game was really poor and really helped us dominate field position, maybe the third most influential player on the field - but not for the right reasons.

Joke award and Dally Messenger deserves more respect than that.

In the old days the Ref used to be the judge for the 3-2-1's

With the Dally M there are 12 points available now with a so called second independent judge - Maximum points a player can receive is 6 points based on a 3-2-1 voting system for both judges

The identity of judges will be kept anonymous for the entirety of the Dally M Medal process, ensuring the independence of voting and the integrity of the voting between the two judges are completely separate.

Whatever system they have people will question it - Should the judges be anonymous ?
    • Dally M votes Roosters vs Broncos : James Tedesco 5, Lindsay Collins 4, Victor Radley 2, Adam Reynolds 1.
I gather the judges allocated the points as follows

    Tedesco - 3
    Radley - 2
    Collins - 1

    Collins - 3
    Tedesco - 2
    Reynolds - 1

It's on par with the Churchill Medal.

I'm still scratching my head about DCE in 2013 and Wighton in 2019 - absolute disgraceful decisions and will forever leave a stench on this award ...

I’m actually a little shocked to see the votes from last week’s game . Reynolds wasn’t even the best Bronco player on the field let alone the Third best player of the match . Manu, Radley,T May ,Sualii would all be ahead of Reynolds . You’ve gotta think there’s a Queenslander judging that .

                  100% correct.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Agree. After the farking stich up on JWH in the Grand Final confirmed to me that the award is bullshit.

Of the 4 Roosters premierships in the NRL era I believe that only Luke Keary in the 2018 Grand Final was the correct choice for Clive Churchill Medal and that Brad Fittler in 2002 and either Brett Morris or Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in 2019 deserved medals on those night I don't know who deserved the 2013 as the team struggled in the first half but it's unfair to award it to Daly Cherry-Evans and if it can go to a losing player on the night then Luke Philips should have a medal for the 2000 Grand Final.

James farking Maloney was the real CC Medal winner in the 2013 GF.

Maybe a Brisbane fan. Reynolds is from NSW.

Judging should never be anonymous. Some will remember when the NRL had egg on their face as one of the judges who voted on the game was at another function at the time and didn't in fact watch the game. Would've never been caught out had they been anonymous and who knows how many more games they would have voted on without actually watching the games had they not been called out.

Transparency is accountability when it comes to Judging.

I appreciate no system is perfect and at the end of the day it's an opinion so we will all disagree but there is an inherent bias against players who have played well but are in a side with multiple other players who also played well.

For example I dont think Talakai (2pts) played better than Joey Manu (0pts), but Talakai was part of a winning side with very few standout players, Joey Manu played well in a side that had quite a few standout players. That’s why I say the 3-2-1 is fundamentally flawed.
