If we are to assume he actually said the word (which has not been settled), IMO there's a fair argument that Spencer's also black (so it's unlikely he intended to say 'yo - your black skin makes you look like a monkey') and it's not being alleged that he went on some Kramer-style racist tirade.

I dunno! It would really irk me if the NRL were to make a massive example of him over this. TBH I've heard FAR worse from NRL commentators who still have their jobs.

To me an allegation of a black dude saying it is up there with a white dude calling me a monkey... or a goose... a cat... a donkey... a dog... a pig...etc. It's more than just a little bit odd that a guy with the same skin colour would be accused of making a connection between an animal and his skin colour (and this then causing unthinkable amounts of hurt/trauma/offence).

If the allegation was against a white dude or was more serious in nature then I wouldn't bother defending it. It simply wasn't though.

If there is no clear audio evidence or definitive evidence from a match official, Spencer is not guilty and cannot be penalised. That's what the outcome will be.

I'm calling it now, because its Easts the NRL will come down hard on Spencer, ala Pearce style. If he was still wearing a panthers jersey it would have been a slap on the wrist.

I just hope that the NRL are consistent with their punishment. From here on any opposition player that calls Tedesco "Teddy" should also receive the same suspension.

If I'm mucking around with my mate Dumbo and we are enjoying each other's humour then it's just good banter.

I don't believe any word or topic should be taboo in the right environment but as a society we do have social norms that we all do our best to try and abide by so we can get along. Without these it would be a miserable place to leave.

I have hated hearing Toups refereed to by that name for years. It's not racial but just dumb. Toops has proven he is so much more than a tall winger. It's a rude and disrespectful nickname.
