When you look at that number which would surely be at least half a billion dollars a year it is hard to argue that superstar players who are the face of the game (Tedesco, Ponga, Manu, Walsh, Cleary etc) are properly compensated with their wages of 800k - 1.3m a season. Great wage compared to Joe the barber who makes 55k a year cutting hair but the NRL and their partners would be making millions and millions of dollars off the stars of the NRL and they don't seem to be that fairly compensated.
Personally I'd like to see the NRL attempt the marquee system which has worked well in the past for the A-League. For those unaware the league allows one player to be paid outside the salary cap as the designated marquee player. In the NRL that would allow a team such as ours to pay a key player (Such as Tedesco) under the marquee player rule and also pay Manu enough that he doesn't need to go and get a second job.
Nani was making over 2 million a year in his A-League stint and if you look at overseas athletes the gap is amazing, Steph Curry is on over a million dollars a week as is Joe Burrow in the NFL
The NRL also have their own operating costs - CEO/Board/Match officials/Admin/ Marketing and promotions / Development officers etc etc.
Manu doesn't need a second job being on 800 to 850k
They do have Marque players in NRLW - 2 to start with which was cut down to 1 - i.e players can be offered full time jobs outside the cap.- a nominal contract value is applied to these players
You can't compare the payments athletes in overseas sports receive with the NRL though
For an example Shohei Ohtani, who became a free agent at the end of the 2023 MLB season, signed a 700 million USD 10-year deal with the LA Dodgers, along with his endorsements and whatnot. He will earn in excess of 1 billion USD during this 10-year period. LA Dodgers payroll for 2023 was over 240 million USD. Ohtani's 70 million USD per year could fund 5 1/2 NRL teams.
The size of the market and interest in the sport generate revenue, and these overseas clubs in a range of sports are also owned by rather wealthy individuals, corporations with rather deep pockets, or a combination of private and public ownership.
MLB teams each receive around 100 Million USD from national and local TV/Pay TV rights
NFL teams each receive around 249 million USD from national and local TV/Pay TV rights
Estimated Premier League prize money and broadcasting revenue for 2022/23: Pounds sterling- Manchester City – $210 million
- Arsenal – $208 million
- Manchester United – $205 million
- Newcastle United – $202 million
- Liverpool – $200 million
- Brighton – $197 million
- Aston Villa – $194 million
- Tottenham Hotspur – $191 million
- Brentford – $189 million
- Fulham – $186 million
- Crystal Palace – $183 million
- Chelsea – $180 million
- Wolves – $178 million
- West Ham – $175 million
- Bournemouth – $172 million
- Nottingham Forest – $170 million
- Everton – $167 million
- Leicester – $164 million
- Leeds – $161 million
- Southampton $159 million
Rugby League has very limited interest globally, which will always affect it's ability to generate revenue outside of its traditional markets (Northern England, A small part of France, Australia (east coast), New /NZ/PNG the Pacific Islands, and Canada is somewhat about it.

I like Joey, he is a very easy guy to like and I hope he re-signs as a centre, but if we are honest he had a very average year last year.
The hooker, halfback and fullback received the brunt of the criticism while Joey slipped under the radar.
Some of those tackles he missed last year just shouldn't happen at NRL level and I can't overlook his six games at five-eighth last year.
He struggled to get involved unless he was playing fullback. Can he play a full season as fullback? It's a tough job and nowhere to hide.
If he is not happy playing centre for the Roosters and wants to play fullback then take the 1.2 from St. George because another average year like last year and even Buzz Rothfield will start to notice.
Then again he might have 17 great minutes in the Grand Final and he will be an immortal.

Of course you can… he’s not a 5/8.
On the contrary I want to forget it ever happened.

Just had a chat with someone very close to Joey and its looking more than likely the Japanesse rugby 1.5 mill offer might be taken up for 2025. Teddys resigning has blocked Hoey to play fullback. So his return will be 2026 and retirement end 2027.1911 1912 1913 1923 1935 1936 1937 1940 1945 1974 1975 2002 2013 2018 2019 2020

Dominic Young for Fullback:
I reckon he would kill that role with his size and pace. The old chiming into the backline and backing up breaks through the middle etc . Sound under the highball and would get the Roosters off to a flying start in their sets with his pace on kick returns.
Get Mini to mentor him
Tedesco is signed until 2025 - not sure if he will be extended past then - be 33 in 2026
Manu possibly off to Rugby in 2025 - returning to NRL in 2026? - 30 in 2026
Dom Young - 25 in 2026
A Possible 1 to 5 Backline in 2026
1. Young
2. Murphy
3. Billy Smith/Toia
4. Manu
5. Nawaqanitawase

the Japanese rugby season starts in December and finishes in May only like 16 rounds so he could play in this and then come back to the chooks in June for mid season late run in 2025? And earn more again
