Rugby Australia table $1.6m deal to NRL star Angus Crichton

In the aftermath of the Wallabies’ humiliating exit from the World Cup, Rugby Australia have sent a two-year, $1.6m offer to lure NRL star Angus Crichton to the 15-man game.

Rugby Australia officials on Wednesday sent an offer to Crichton’s management which detailed a package deal between the governing body and Super Rugby franchise the Western Force. The deal is for 2024 and 2025.

The move comes amid criticism of Rugby Australia following a disastrous World Cup campaign and this masthead’s revelation that coach Eddie Jones conducted an interview with Japanese Rugby just days before the start of the tournament.

Crichton was overnight on a plane to France to watch friends play at the Rugby World Cup and isn’t due back until the end of October.

Crichton is contracted with the Sydney Roosters until the end of 2024 on a deal worth around $675,000 in the NRL, but has been given the club’s blessing to explore a future in the game where he made a name for himself in high school.

As a former Australian schoolboys and first XV star with prestigious Sydney private school, Scots College, Crichton’s name has long been linked with a return to the 15-man game.

After landing the prized signature of Joseph Suaalii earlier in the year, RA chairman Hamish McLennan was vocal in identifying Crichton and South Sydney captain Cameron Murray as future targets.

After missing out on Murray, who has re-signed with the Rabbitohs until 2028, McLennan is working hard behind the scenes to secure Crichton’s offer.
The Rugby League World Cup winner is said to be reviewing the offer, with RA waiting for an answer.

Crichton is still contracted at the Roosters next year, but there is a chance he may be released and would be free to join rugby in 2024 should he wish to.

The surprising element to the deal is it would see Crichton head west and play for the Western Force in Super Rugby Pacific.

The Force, under coach Simon Cron, are building a strong roster, with Wallabies halfback Nic White and five-eighth Ben Donaldson heading to Western Australia next year for a fresh start.

It would be a big move for Crichton, who grew up in country NSW and went to school in Sydney. He has played all of his professional career in the harbour city.

However, the bigger talking point for rugby fans to accept is that game’s decision makers are splashing more money at a cross-code star when the Wallabies’ World Cup woes have prompted cries for investment in grassroots and pathways programs.

    McLennan declined to comment.

Crichton’s offer is believed to be worth around $800,000 per season but RA sources say they are not 100 per cent certain they will get their man.

After spending a reported $1.6 million per year to get Suaalii to switch codes from 2025 onwards, the news will certainly raise eyebrows.

RA will conduct a review into the Wallabies after their dismal World Cup campaign that is likely to see the men in gold exit in the pool stages.

Very happy with this & hope he jumps at the chance. Frees up cash for us to invest elsewhere. Has been pretty disappointing the last few years & I think he knows the $675 he’s on now is overs, so surely takes the money on offer in RU. Think an escape to the wilderness of WA will also free him up a bit.

He and his management would be silly not to take the offer !

I’m conflicted. I think we have depth to cover, and he has been well below his best but I also think there is a chance he could bounce back to his best.

He just needs to do what’s best for himself and I feel that is probably leaving, even if the Wallabies is a basket case.

Good luck to him and Suaalii, but like RTS(although making the all blacks is something else), I can't see these guys kicking on in that code.

I cant see that code kicking on either lol.

Thanks Lord Angus the Critchon for helping us go back to back.

Yeah no issues with him going. He's been below his best for a while.

He should take the money and seek a fresh start. Will help him mentally I reckon aswell to escape to Perth and be fairly anonymous.

I find this to be strange move from RA. It reeks of desperation to me. I don't think Gus is a natural fit into the 15 man game anymore. He is too small for a forward (but could probably play break-away at a pinch), and too slow to play center (the only back-line position that makes sense) at the highest level. I could see him being a decent addition to the Force, without necessarily being a stand-out. I'd be surprised if he even made the Wallabies side TBH.

Yeah if anything I woulda thought they'd be looking to train some northern hemisphere style forwards. IMO their recruitment/development plans reek of desperation...

Has not reached the heights we thought he would when he signed from the vermin. Shame because he had so much potential.

Happy to see him move to Union and free up much needed cap space.

Yep he's taking up too much cap space for the performances the club is getting from him.

The club is thin on edge forwards although Wong has a bright future and Sitili will be back next year. The Pom from the Bulldogs would be a handy pick up.

You can see why Aus rugby is where it is
suaali is on an overpriced contract now of $750k and will be paid $1.5m next year
won’t make the roosters 17 next season so happy to move him on
Gus has unfortunately not progressed since joining us, I was excited when he joined and he has shown up at times but not consistently enough
and here rugby Australia offer him a big deal after his worst season and mental health issues
happy for him to go as I would rather we keep wong, Whyte and may
why Aus rugby would not try Wong instead of critchon

I really wish it worked out for Gus at the club. He seems like a really good person, he grew up supporting the club and he had periods at the club where he was an elite player.

There just wasn't enough consistency and for whatever reason he just struggled to seem find his role in the team.

If true I wish him the best of luck, I hope he makes a bag and finds some happiness.

Bit of a shame if he goes. I still think we haven't seen the best of him.
