  • Success or failure?

What do we need to achieve this season for it to be classed a success?

For mine, making the GF qualifier would make this season a success.

I understand everyone wants to win a GF but let’s be honest, there are some very very good sides all competing for that same goal. If we could be in the top 4, eg playing a GF qualifier from where we’ve been this season, I think that’s a great result.

On the other hand, losing tomorrow night would not only hurt for the individual loss but would have to be considered somewhat of a failure for 2023.

Bit harsh, considering we are missing 4 first choice backline.

I don’t see it as harsh at all. They were pretty much there for the rest of the season.

The thread is about the result for 2023, not one game.

Considering where we are now compared to where we were 7 weeks ago it’s a success for me. We didn’t start the season well. There were some odd performances from some individuals and from the team in general. There were questions and rumours galore. But the way we came back and showed grit and resilience is testimony of what this team is capable of.
As long as they go out there and give it their best then it’s a successful season.

All though we came good at the end I still consider the season a failure.

We were favourites to win the premiership by many before the season started, our poor start killed the season.
Sneaking into the 8 thanks to a late surge and other teams falling away at the end gives a false we succeeded mentality.
If we missed the 8 a proper season review would have been conducted and changes made but now it will be everything is good and no changes required because the KPIs say so.

We haven't played a full season well since going back to back. Things need to change to be on a similar level to Penrith who don't look like missing the top 4 in the foreseeable future.
We had so much success over the last 10 years it was expected to continue but I think the club thought they didn't have to evolve to continue with it.

IMO because we're such a good team, fans rightfully expect us to play for premierships. That said... if we'd clicked earlier in the season then we may well have put ourselves in exactly the same place (i.e. replaced the Storm/Warriors in the 8 but lost to Brisbane/Penrith in week 1 and ended up playing this same game of footy).

Those crying doom and gloom are full of it. We finished 7th and are into week 2 of the finals. This is a top-6 finals finish and a win would make it a top-4 finals finish.

I'd argue fans are probably expecting a top-4 finish as a measure of 'success' in that top-4 is the par. One short is still decent though. Overall we've had a solid year, despite the slow start.

Robbo's ability to turn around our season despite losing an assistant coach, a head of recruitment and a solid front rower says something. Those who say we don't develop players can look at Wong, May, Smith and Baker. A big part of our season has been that they've stepped up. This is a success in itself as it's enabled us to dump Lodge's baggage and carve our own way forward.

Except that you just made it about one game when you said if we win - season success, if we lose, somewhat of a failure.

We finished the season with a negative PD, so I’d consider anything other than a GF victory from here to be a failure.

Failure is too strong a word. I would say we have definitely underachieved to date.

Given where we were on the ladder 8-9 weeks ago, you could say it was a success that we made the finals. Yes there were some very disappointing performances, several of them downright embarrassing. But here we are.

Yeah, poor choice of words I admit but I’m sure you see the point right?

Every game now is sudden death for every team so every teams success is now measured the same way. Coming down to one game.

I would be comfortable in calling it a success to make the final 4. Especially considering the calibre of the company.

The overall season is a failure unless we make a GF imo. The last 6-7 weeks was successful but don’t forget we are only in finals because of luck. Other games went our way.

Very proud of the performance last weekend and a win this weekend would be a mammoth effort.

But we won’t taste any success until we learn to start the season better and reduce our injury toll. These are known shortcomings and have been for years yet as a club we continue replaying these season upon season.

My expectations are pretty high because I’m still of the firm belief we have a squad capable of premiership. I know others disagree but I think our recruitment/retention is top notch and if all players were available and played consistent footy together we could give the panthers/Bronx a decent run.

Premiership window opportunities don’t open for long, so when you miss them it hurts.

If we win tomorrow night and make the top 4, it is a pass mark. Anything less than that its an underachievement.

Sure, I see your point and there is a valid argument for success measured by your end of year position but I would still consider it an unsuccessful season, unless we win the GF, given the roller coaster we’ve endured.

It's been a failure. Salvaged somewhat by our late season run. We are not close to being as good as Panthers or Broncos.

It could have been better , but proud of what they've done.

Looking back, it took too long to sort things out .
They have literally busted a gut to get here.
Let's win one more and see what happens.
