  • History shows Roosters’ hammer is set to fall ... but on who?

    Dan Walsh SMH

    July 16, 2023 — 7.45pm

History is on the Roosters’ side, and three premierships in a decade are rightly pointed to, when club heavyweights talk of their current lot in the Bondi Life.

History won’t quite be made if Trent Robinson manages to pull his star-studded side out of a 2023 tailspin that requires at least six, most likely seven, wins from their last seven games to just play finals. Eight straight post-Origin wins just last year remedied a similar plight.
But history also points to the hammer falling soon enough - just not on Robinson, given those three titles and the club’s unwavering faith in one of the best coaches of the modern era.

Put plainly, the Roosters deal in premierships, not just finals appearances, and previous slides have been dealt with judiciously and ruthlessly.

The last slip, and it was only from defending premiers to an exit in the second week of the finals, saw Kyle Flanagan endure a topsy-turvy 2020 campaign replacing Cooper Cronk, the year ending in a Friday night loss against Canberra.

By the following Tuesday,Flanagan was told he was no longer in the club’s halves planningand by the end of the month he was gone.

Three years prior, Cronk’s signing in late 2017 proved one of the best pieces of recruitment in the NRL era, back-to-back premierships coming 18 months after the worst season of Robinson’s tenure - a second-last finish in 2016.

Mitchell Pearce was a favourite of Robinson, chairman Nick Politis and countless others at the club.

But he was still the fall guy for Cronk to arrive as “someone to win them a comp this year”, as Pearce himself put it after moving to Newcastle.

Already this season, assistant coach Jason Ryles and prop Matt Lodge haveexited in quick time once the wind blew that way.

Lengthy absences for Brandon Smith, Sam Walker, Angus Crichton and Sitili Tupouniua haven’t helped a season-long search for cohesion in a roster and playmaking stocks rivals would kill for.

In turn, Robinson and chief playmaker Luke Keary have both spoken of “a little bit of angst when we play” that is “choking the club at the moment”.

The coach has shouldered responsibility for easing that pressure all season, and even with a 7-10 record and the second-worst offensive return in the game, there’s genuine surprise and few definitive explanations when experts try to reckon with the Roosters slide in 2023.

“I don’t think it comes from Trent Robinson,” Andrew Johns said of the club’s poor form on The Sunday Footy Show.

“I think it comes from the senior players. They’re the ones out there in the trenches, I think it’s the senior players that have got to challenge the rest of them.”

Robinson conceded frustration, too, after Saturday’s heavy loss to Melbourneat both “our end of sets [that] were as bad as I’ve seen”, and Walker’s niggling ACL issue that has now kept him off the paddock for months.

The belief in Walker as the Roosters’ future is still steadfast, and that he’ll return, like so many young halves, as a better player for his mid-season axing. Elsewhere, more questions than answers remain.

Arguments can and have repeatedly been made around the best use and positions for Smith, Joey Manu, Joseph Suaalii, James Tedesco and Victor Radley as each have battled for fluency and form this season.

“You know that as a player, too,” former captain Braith Anasta said. “You feel the pressure, you feel the outside noise. You know they’re looking from outside in.”

The generational turnover from the Roosters’ back-to-back titles has been ongoing for several years now and continues next season as Spencer Leniu and Dominic Young arrive on lucrative deals.

Keary, Daniel Tupou and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves are all at the back end of their careers and are joined on an off-contract list from November 1 by Crichton, Smith (2025 player option) and Manu, while Suaalii is already rugby-bound at the end of 2024.

Robinson and the Roosters have never shied away from a tough decision or the conversation that comes with it. History says there’s a few coming in the near future.

Apart from issues with our halves and centre, I think we desperately need some edge forwards that trouble the defense. Sitili does, but thats about it these days as Gus looks done

Robbo is safe...ive 0 doubt. If this happens next year then moving close to the edge.
You all know that no club can be at the top every year..in fact like Man U it makes for a dull comp.

The Phoenix Chook will rise again if we recruit wise and get back to basics that we've lost.

        Take your pick.
        Coaches: any.
Players: Radley, Keary, Butcher (either), Suaalii, B.Smith (x 2), Hutchison, Momorovski, Allan, Crichton etc.

Pleading for a centre who has the ability to do anything other than just miss tackles. Billy is a liability, not only in defence, but offers nothing in attack. Has no pace. May as well put Hutchison in his spot, he would be a like for like replacement. Look at how good the centres are nowadays and what they can offer to a team. Can break a game open. Tago, Graham, Farmnworth, Best, Holmes, Penisini etc. I can count on one hand the amount of games Keary has taken over for us the past 3-4 years. Weak kicking game, typically scared to take on the line since the head knocks, void of leadership. Walker needs to be given the keys next season, but has to be paired with a bigger half, who can direct, and build pressure. 2RF’s who are more than a tackling bag. Look at players like Nikora, Horsburgh, Fifita, Sorensen, Matterson, Olakau’atu. They are main focal points in attacks. Hard lines, great offload, good agility, big boys. We’re so far behind with our 2RF’s other than Sitili. Front rowers who can bend a line but can throw a ball out the back. Tino, Haas, JFH, Paseka, Nelson etc.

So effectively a clean out. Every component of that team needs fixing. It can’t happen overnight. Which is concerning considering the plight of this club over the past few years, and how long it will take to get us back to some semblance of a competitive team. But whatever it takes i’d guess. Wishful thinking that this is fixed quickly, but if you or Politis believe we can keep the same/similar roster and compete next year, let alone the next 3-4 years, you’re borderline delusional.

This club went from being the benchmark, to having a combined 4-20 record against Penrith, Souths, and Melbourne since 2020. Change is needed.

Spencer and Dom Young “lucrative” deals? Aren’t they both around the $550k mark?

Our recruitment at all levels has gone downhill since O'Sullivan left.

Pearce wasn't axed. He left of his own accord.

What's Andrew Johns on about with don't blame Robbo but look at the senior players, seriously?

Rd 1 losses - not being ready & switched on early

Dropping Walker - gee we've improved massively

Positional changes- yeah real winner there, 2nd worst attack

Teddy's scheduled rest - great timing in a big game.

The Roosters way - can't score, can't defend, always crap in errors/ completions, penalties, 6 agains.

                    Good one Joey.

I think Robinson has a lot to answer for this season - nearly everything he's done has resulted in a negative impact on the team's results. With that said, he has a lot to answer for the premierships and getting the best out of the likes of Teddy, Manu, etc throughout the years.

For that reason he will be given more time. I think we should be tapping some players on the shoulder. Get rid of Keary a year early. He is done. That would be ruthless because I think he is well loved by the club and its fans (rightfully so) but sending a stern message by going out and replacing him with a year left... that is ruthless.

Flanno going was not ruthless. There is a difference between culling a 30 game rookie and culling a 3-time premiership winning half. We need to.

The 20-4 win loss ratio to the "top" sides since 2020 gets worse. Thats 700 total points against to 343 for. Conceding close to 30 points per game.

Theres no ducking and weaving those stats. It highlights an inability of our coaching staff to nail those big matches....since 2020.

How ridiculous...Keary is our best player by some distance. He would be killing it with a well drilled squad around him. I'd back him for another couple of years yet.

I've been wondering whether he will go down in the Vautin/Mason/O'Meley category of most hyped and overrated acquisitions?
