  • Lack of Leadership

Very evident in the 2nd half yesterday.
When leading by 8 points with 10 minutes to go you don't play panic football. It looked like they were trying to score off every play. One of our more experienced players then gifts Newcastle a long range try to put them within two points.
We should've closed that game down, and someone should've stood up and calmed the farm. Like Cronk or Cordner would of.
I don't think even having Teddy there would've helped as I don't rate him as a captain.
    Robbo should not be happy.

I actually agree about Teddy . I think his game would be much better without the pressure of captaincy. Not sure who you would have instead though .

I don't buy into the Teddy can't captain talk. He is getting better at it every season. Just my opinion, but he has captained NSW to origin victories and Australia to a World Cup. Look at some of the other "experienced" leaders in the competition. Bromwich, DCE, Hunt, Gutho. None of them have a better leadership record than Teddy.

That's where James Maloney and Cooper Cronk would step up, calm things down and manage the game.

Having our captain and chief playmaker off the field with a broken jaw leaves a bit of a leadership gap, don’t you think?

I reckon we closed out that game really well. Newcastle had most of the ball in the second half, were playing very well and had 22,000 fans cheering them on. Angus’ pass was dumb, but overall he had an excellent game and led by example.

Whoever decided to take the penalty shot at goal made a wise decision.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Yeah Maloney was another good example.

I don't see how you can say we closed that game out well?
It was panic stations with risky play the balls and allelujah passes galore. They had no awareness of the clock or the scoreboard.
Someone should've made them chill the grill.

Maybe Keary might have been the difference, but we'll never know. I'm yet to see him have close to a Cronk-like influence on the team.

They were lucky to get another penalty that close to half time having knocked back the two points a couple of minutes before.

With 10 minutes to we only lead by 2, not 8. I thought we closed the game out very well, the only error I can remember us making was Egan Butcher close to the with a minute left on the clock.

For a side who had lost it’s organiser and for a spine who were all 2nd choice options and played very few minutes together I thought our last tackle options were good, I thought our transitions from defence to attack were really good and we seemed to be holding our nerve really well despite only leading by 2.

I disagree, I was surprised how calm and cool they were. It was a significant difference to the panic that set in agains the Dragons a month ago.

                      You're nit picking.
We led by 8 with "approximately" ten to go.
Newcastle closing to within 2 points was the result of panic plays and lack of awareness.
                      It shouldn't have happened.

Our captain had a busted draw, our half is playing his first game. No surprise we had no leadership.

Look at Joe Root in the England cricket team. Once he relinquished the captaincy he's been unstoppable with the bat.

There are no other alternatives to Teddy unfortunately.

The JWH we saw with Robbo in the presser spoke like a proper captain. They both look formidable together rather than the Robbo and Teddy. I’ve always thought JWH should have been skipper upon the retirements of Cordner and Friend.

It's not not picking if your argument is that we were playing loose football I the last 10 minutes.

I completely disagree, we managed the last 10minutes very well. There seemed to be a sharpening of the mindset when the margin was closed to 2points with 10 to go.

Our set transitions were better, our field positon management was better, our ability to control their tempo of play through our defensive pressures was better.

I disagree entirely, I think our play in the last 10 was very good and I can barely remember Newcastle having an opportunity.
