  • Some stats and analysis

Found this the other day. It goes into detail analysis as to why we are losing. Don’t know if it’s credible or not but thought to share here and let you guys decide. It’s an interesting breakdown of our problems.

The problem is not defending our errors. Prime example last game when Lodge knocks on, from ensuing set Penrith run 80 meters to score and take score from 4-0 to 10-0 just before halftime. At 4-0 we were in the grind and despite Penrith having a mountain of possession we were matching them. It was the turning point.

Wow... a very detailed analysis, so what i get from it overall is that we are
      not playing as a team
      Not playing with committment
      Not playing with confidence
      too many one off runs
      too little line engaged
nearly every area of the game is off.
Looks like a lot of the players are just not stepping up for their mates.

Not enough hungry and tough committed players atm.
All seem soft and sitting back comfortably drinking lattes and riding in luxury coaches.

I've been watching our replays of 2018/19. We currently look like a B Grade Park footy team in comparison.

It's up to the coach to sort it out.

Great read and a very interesting take, thanks for posting. I await Rooster 6's inevitable reply as to why it's all wrong...

I'll give you 2 players that would've improved this 17 that we let slip through our fingers... Sam Verrills and Jacob Preston. Granted, not like adding them and we'd be world beaters, but 2 really good first grade players that provide something we are currently missing. Makes you wonder about the retention aswell as the recruitment.

Sammy V provides guile, agility, speed and nous out of dummy half and is better than Turpin, who we can agree has actually been good for us this season all things considered. I am convinced that he and Cheese could've been perfect in tandem. Keeping in mind he was signed til 2026 when BS was announced. Given even before Cheese injury he wasn't getting 80, it made the sale of SV all the more baffling given we got Turpin to do a similar role although with less quality.

Jacob Preston is a great toiler, good defender and runs a good line. He is a natural edge player that we are trying to shoehorn Egan Butcher into. Would allow both Butcher Bros. to thrive in their preferred middle rotation positions and give us a hole runner who can roll the sleeves up ala Boyd Cordner. He will only improve aswell and has looked the Dogs most consistent this season.

That’s the best statistical analysis I’ve read for a very long time; many thanks for sharing. I think he’s nailed the conclusions well and unfortunately I don’t think there’s an easy fix with the current squad the we have, coach included.

A too simple one-out game plan yet still lots of errors and penalties, low metres per set as no punch through the forwards, tackling machines not offering anything else, low offloads, heaps of tries on our edges as our backs can’t tackle, shit kicking game and metres gained so we start sets further back than anyone else and our opposition start theirs closer to halfway than anyone else, etc, etc. It’s not just about the players trying harder and being more committed; it’s the entire system that needs a complete rethink.

It really shows that we need a significant overhaul of the strategy, systems and resources to be up there with the best teams again. The strategy is what we want to achieve, the systems are how we will achieve it and the coaches/players are the resources used to achieve it. All are failing terribly at the moment.

Whilst the stats tell our current story well, they also tell us why Penrith are a great chance of the three-peat. Their time will come too if they fail to evolve like us.

                      Depressing.

I think Keary,Teddy and Lindsay have been playing well in recent weeks particularly Collins (we have our big dog in waiting) JWH never stops trying, age has undoubtedly caught up to him and he can no longer play for sustained periods without getting injured or into trouble, he needs to be used wisely by Robbo off the bench to inject some steel into our defence when fatigue kicks in, Turpin is a great example of this can tackle all day.

Sitili looks like the only one out of our pack that can bust the line lately, he’s been on a mission puts his body on the line in attack and defence, I believe the team as a whole try their guts out no doubt, but there is just no resilience to stay in the fight when things don’t go our way I.e ill discipline we go belly up pretty quickly.

Disappointments have been Lodge what happened to that back end of last season form we went 8 on the bounce and he was a big part of that run?

Gussy just isn’t himself I know Robbo would never bring him back in if he wasn’t 100% so what on Earth is it? Confidence?

Radley, gee whiz this guy bleeds RWB I love this guy however, he has become such a liability, loses his head and gets binned no control what so ever until he learns to control his aggression and calm his temperament he’s just going to make it tougher for us.

JAS- gone to Rugby already no point in persisting with centre experiment must be wing or Reggies.

Joey Manu- **** I feel for this guy not a 5/8th I think we can all agree at least not yet anyway back to CTR/FB.

**** me dead times are tough footy wise, been a very frustrating season, I love this club and all the success they have provided us in recent times, we have got to be patient I do believe we have the team to be at the very least competitive, we just need to keep our heads.
I believe young Sandon will provide a point of difference for us I have only seen him play in a handful of Reggie’s games he looks every bit a footballer hopefully he doesn’t get to caught up in the media surrounding us and our form and just goes out plays his game, picks his moments and has a dig.

We are underdogs against the Knights which seems like it’s been a lifetime ago since we were which for now is a good thing less pressure hopefully we can use that to our advantage and bring us the two points.
Joey Manu to have a blinder Sitili close second will bag a meat pie or two.

                        GO EASTS!!

                        Apology for the long post.

That's the part that was the scariest. We take very few risks with the ball as compared with previous seasons, but still make way more than our fair share of errors. A low risk attack must have very very few errors to compensate for the lack of flair. Maybe that's what the Walker brothers mean when the say the Roosters style doesn't suit how Sam plays.

                              Had to laugh at this...

For the Roosters, Billy Smith is by far the worst of them with 8 mistakes in four games from 86 touches, or one every 10.75 possessions. No wonder he found himself out of the line up on Saturday, replaced by noted turnstile Drew Hutchison.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.
