  • What we need for our club to be a success

    Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum.I've been a long time supporter of the chooks and follow their games closely from ever since I was a kid and my dad would take me to the games. I absolutely hate that pathetic excuse of a club by the name of South Sydney, and every time there's a game between us and them it's WW3 between me and all my souffs mate. I just recently discovered this forum and wished I had joined earlier.

But to answer my question, I reckon all we need is..... patience. If you look at all the dynasties of past Melbourne, and recently Manly, one thing in common with them is that they invested in talented youngsters in the important positions and filled the rest of the positions with no name (no frills) fringe first graders. I know many of you will have differing opinions but you can't tell me that guys like Daniel Conn and Phil graham didn't do a good job for us in 2010. We have a huge list of potential stars in the U20s. I reckon the best decision made in the last 5 yrs was bringing in Taylor as the 20s coach.

The point I'm trying to allude to is that we cannot buy SBW. regardless of the impact he will make in his short space of time at our club , he will soak up all our money (like that other sponge Mr Anasta) and banish promising 20 year old to future greatness at other clubs. Honestly when Anasta announced that he was leaving our club I could see a little light at the end of the tunnel. I don't hate him, just pity him, anyway thats a convo for another day and another thread.

It is vital we develop future stars and get them playing with each other for a long period of time 3-4 yrs , and at the same time use Moneyball ratings, like the swans, to sign any potential fringe first graders who might have impact and fill the void until the future stars peak. I'm not a big fan of the AFL but the swans have made the top 8 every yr for a while now, so there must be some logic behind this idea.

I'm not sure who reads this blog and whether anyone associated with the club reads this forum, but honestly every time I see someone like shillo or even winterstein the other night killing us, it makes me sick in the stomach.

Welcome Rooster2013. You deserved a better welcome than that response by John, but if you have been following this forum for a while you will understand he is a good bloke with a twisted sense of humour (takes one to know one )

I understand your sentiments re SBW, but for a while now we have been offloading a hell of a lot of players without signing anyone new.

I don't know if SBW will work out, but we do need some kind of spark added to the mix. Yes we have some good young prospects, but like most here I would like to see one major signing at least - we must be able to afford it with the departure recently of: Carney, Myles, Anasta (soon), Ryles, etc.

I was in no way disparaging his post, it was very insightful. More insightful than my vitriol laced attacks on Braith Anasta and Brian Smith.

I agree Player1, we do need to sign some players particularly in key positions like 1 and 9. However using an example from last year: Parramatta went "looking for a spark" so they signed sandow, for , I dunno 500K. 6 weeks into the comp they've just realized that they've thrown 500k away. Had they purchased the top 5 U20 halfbacks in 2011 , they wouldn't had spent more than 400K all together.

Honestly, I've seen us make some stupid buys over the last 10 years, and it would kill me if we spent the reported $800k on a player who turned out to be a lemon. It's too high risk go large on one player. If you sign 7 emerging first graders you can say statistically that at least 4 of them, will go on to better things. I reckon that's why so many clubs have such young squads these days. I don't ever remember the roosters fielding a team with only 2 players above 25. I think with a better youth system( toyota cup) players going through to NRL are a far better standard than before and this means that they can outshine older 25 years olds who end up getting $$ in superleage uk.

A rational look at the club and it's current strategies.

            Good posts 2013.

That said don't expect too much of a logical response. I'm not talking JohnnyBoy, I mean often when you put it out there in these forums you either get ignored or ridiculed by some of the frustrated coaches/CEOs/Chaimen/Scouts etc.

That's why I use the . I too tried to be logical and normal, back in the earlier days on the forums. It got me nowhere slow. Then I realized the biggest loudest fool gets the girl, sorta thingy, like at school. So I started the . The rest is his-story.

            That said good luck.

            GO EASTS.

              Welcome to the forum..

You'll find plenty of like minded people here with regards to lol@5(c)uFF$..

I agree patience is needed, but i'm sure you yourself would agree it's a tough thing to have once the comp is in full swing & the club is producing rubbish most weeks on the field..

You make some good points on the $BW issue..It's his baggage that worries most people, along with the pricetag, but once he is out on the field winning games for the club those sentiments will fade..As much as i hate the Mundine Circus that comes with $BW,the thoughts of the destruction he could cause on-field for us means i'm starting to fall into the "Sign $BW' camp..It's the opportunities & room he could create for a player like SKD,plus the grunt he can bring up front that are swaying me..

Which leads me to your next point..We should keep developing future stars, but once these kids reach the top grade having an immense talent like $BW to play with will make the transition from kiddie footy & reserve grade that much easier..I'd want a 3 year deal for him though, then he can box off season if he wants..With the imminent increase to the salary cap we shouldn't have to lose any kids to get him, especially after somehow miraculously off loading Bwaiff to the Tigpies (can anyone still believe Sheens bought him
              ..

              Anyway,welcome again..

I think a 1 year at a time contract with SBW is the way to go.

                Thats all he is worth.

No way - we will be half a month into a new deal when everyone starts talking about where he's going the year after, Rothfield goes on about how SBW has split the playing group, etc. etc.

Two years at least, three if possible, otherwise fuuck him.

We need a top coach like Bellamy otherwise the good young talent we have will be wasted yet again.

Totally true !!!!!! I've always thought there was a media agenda against us especially with rothfield. For mine had the media/Myles had not intervened we'd still have Carney, and I'm not talking about the "built fumbling smurf" Justin Carney. Can you honestly tell me that "He's over his demons". He's probably going on the booze even more than before but the media are shielding the sharks. I posted the question once on the daily telegraph but it wasn't published.

With all the players which we have bought over the years, the most I hate is Myles. After giving this guy a second chance, this is how he repays us, by taking down our best player. Had he been apart of any workforce in the real world he'd be lining up in the dole line with another one of our former salary cap sponges "mr sponge bob himself" willie Mason and never allowed to work anywhere again. I believe our Nrl system is too soft on allowing troubled player to move to other clubs with minimal punishment.

Bellamy is off contract when Smith is off contract.

The Roosters should honour Smith's contract, at the end of the day even though we as fan disaprove of his selections & his non game plans he did get us to a GF which NO one predicted, had a lousy 2011 & has the team in the 8 this year. Their are worst coaches than him.

Yeah I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that article that he was leaving . What was even more funnier was the positive comments left by all the tigers supporters. I was just thinking, "have they watched any of his games in the last 2 years , or did they just see that flukey field goal in that semi, which to his credit is probably the best thing he has ever done.

Yes because he never had any in the first place. Please be educated here "Carney has never had a drinking problem he has always been a fitness fantatic".

I agree Fred absolutely unreserved... I understand that TAYLOR is getting a lot out of the NYC players and are responding to his skill training and structure, I have even heard from a player that he actually rates Taylor over Smiff..
I would like to see him have a go at NRL, he will surprise many.
