  • Jarryd Hayne - the New Fittler.

    Fittler as Dr. Frankenstein.

BRAD Fittler has seven days to do what Parramatta couldn't do in three years - make Jarryd Hayne a five-eighth. Despite two failed attempts by the Eels to transform Hayne into a No.6, the enigmatic 23-year-old is once again being thrust into the controversial playmaker role by City Origin selectors.

The move comes after NSW coach Ricky Stuart used his column with The Sunday Telegraph to explain that he not only remains convinced Hayne is a quality six, but that the Blues offer more attacking potency with him there.

So how does CIty coach Fittler now aim to do in a week what even Hayne has previously admitted "doesn't work"?

"I've always been a fan of Jarryd as a five-eighth," Fittler said last night.

"He has a real presence and I know if I was defending against him, you'd be constantly watching where he's going. Plus, at six, Jarryd's in the game the whole time.

"At fullback he can go in and out of the game a little bit but this way he's in the game the whole time."

So what does Freddy do that Parramatta couldn't?

"Sometimes when you walk away from you're team when times are tough it freshens you right up," the NSW and Australian legend continued.

"I know I've been here at Penrith in the 1990s, there were stages when we were going pretty ordinary and playing Origin, going in there relieved to be playing with people who were winning.

"We won't be showing him videos of Parramatta and he won't have to worry about what he's done in the first seven weeks. I don't want to fill Jarryd's head with too much, he's a good enough player. And if Mitch (halfback Mitchell Pearce) can get us a chance to be in the game, Jarryd's a chance to be a good five-eighth.

Begs the question why we don't have Freddy in some capacity at the club...

A club and league legend, not head coach material but seriously talented and actually pretty insightful about the game behind the dopey bullshit.

It broke my heart when the club had to sack him, we should have him back.

Although there isn't much point when Anasta is the six.

Mortimer and Pearce could benefit though.

Of course, structured, sensible coaching doesn't fit in with the ad-lib Smith master plan.

On topic: I don't think Hayne is a 5/8, and if he's having one of his off days Pearce will have to do a lot. Will be interesting to see if, like in 2011, Pearce goes way better at City with structure and hard running forwards around him.

BJ is an interesting pick. I still think he's a backrower, but perhaps with some good ball he'll kill it outwide.

Pearce will shine with a decent 5/8th and a good set of pigs in front of him.

Freddo wasn't sacked his contract wasn't extended, he saw out his deal.

Freddo was asked to stay and help, by Smiff himself, Freddo didn't want to. I guess he wasn't feeling the love and maybe needed a break from the club.

Talking structure and sensible coaching, ever see Freddo coaching??? My Lordy that was some kinda structure. Although I will give him credit on Gus advice he knew how to beat Melba, the slowdown kick out thingy.

Listening to Fredo69er too often is like reading Rothwitt. All this no game plan thingy shows why some have very little knowledge of the game. Or they are just sheep.

Fitler had a couple of years to turn Anasta into a 6.
Ended up with a sooky baby ballerina lock.
          Hayne coaches himself

Sticky has rocks in his head.

Hayne carries Parra on his shoulders with the supporting cast of Roberts and Sandud. LOL

Last year and before that was even worse. Robson and Mortein. Even Casey McGuire got thrown in there.

Just leave the bloke at the back. He is the best player NSW have, just let him play in the position he is comfortable in!

He was the only reason the dreadfull eels got so close.

The City halves line-up is the essentially the Roosters combination in 2014.

Ricky just play Hayne at fullback, thenCarney can play 5/8th. I'm sure these two will put the maroons on the back foot!

Hayne is a good player no doubt about that but overated, not rep capable anymore and now gets more injuries. Hes also picked his game up against the Warriors i saw a little bit of 09 in him. Same for Carney what a player i wish he didnt get drunk we were forced to let him go hopefully Morts plays 5/8 instead of whinging Braith sorry mate you cant play that anymore lock 4 u

I would've thought Freddy picked Hayne to play 5/8th so that would open up a place for Banasta to play fullback, where Freddy loves him!

Not even Bennett and his staff could make anasta a decent pivot
                          Is that the full story,
                          or is your news limited?

My bad - I guess it just feels like he was sacked because of everything that went on that year. Fuuck it was an ugly time.

It's funny what you say about Fittler, because in the back end of '07 and in '08 he actually set up some very nice set pieces for us, from memory using Tupou and guys like Paea. They worked pretty bloody well when the poofters in pink (or was it yellow back then) didn't pull us up for obstruction.

I reckon he would help out our halves a fair bit. In my (biased) eyes he is the greatest to pull on a boot, and I'd love to have him back at the club.

Holy shit I forgot that Hayne was only 23.

Everyone is way too harsh on him, he has the talent to be anything with the right attitude.
