People have been complaining about match officials ever since organised sport commenced so no different nowadays to those times.
The difference nowadays is they do have access to technology to review certain decisions they make and of course with this technology all decisions they make can be scrutinised more and more than they ever were in days when such technology didn't exist.
They have to make decisions instantaneous without the benefit of countless replays that folk at the ground and especially watching on TV can view.
Hard gig being a match official in any sport whether played at a professional or amateur level though and not a job that anyone can do or wants to do.
They certainly struggle to get match officials in a range of sports at both junior and senior amateur levels as the verbally and even physical abuse they endue is not worth it for most to become one
Players make mistakes including the same one's week after week and that is seen as part and parcel of any sport played but match officials are expected to be perfect and not make any.
I think they generally do a very good job and it would be helpful in officiating matches if coaches and players actually didn't try to flout or take advantage of certain rules.
You saw this so called "gamesmanship" with the blood bin rule (cases of fake blood) and even the concussion rule for an example - players coming off for a concussion test when actually they had another injury - been tightened up now at least with the independent doctors overseeing this
Also players being coached with the exception of the Roosters ( notwithstanding JWH one off one ) to lie down to have the bunker look at a tackle or incident is another example of this so called "gamesmanship" which is actually detrimental to the game and the team and player in question.
No Match officials NO Sport
Examples of Remuneration for match officials - AFL didn't list remuneration amounts but have a similar tiered salary system for match officials as other major sports do- some only list averages. - Toughest match official gig is MLB - lowest paid EPL- NRL Refs tiered payment system - tier 5 Rookie Ref ( 123 k AUD - 80 k USD) to tier 1 most experienced Ref's ( 246k AUD - 160 K USD) plus additional payments for finals and GF/Rep Matches-SOO and Tests - 24 game regular season.
- NFL average ref wage is 188 k USD a year plus additional payments for officiating in play off's and the super bowl - 16 Game regular season.
- MLB Umpires wages from 150k for Rookie Umpires to 450 k for the more experienced Umpires plus additional payments for officiating in post season play offs (17.5k USD per series ) and World Series games (20k USD per series) - 162 game regular season - minimum 6 months on the road as part of a umpire crew of 4.
- NHL- Average salary for referees - 212 k USD - 80 game regular season.
- NBA - Average salary for referees - 375 k USD - 82 game regular season.
- EPL refs - Between £38,500 and £42,000 ( 47k USD to 51k USD)– which varies based on experience. plus £1,150(1419 USD) for each match they ref - 38 game regular season.

We're from Tigerland

One doesn't believe the game has changed since he started following the sport in the early 1980's as far as the influence referees have in controlling matches however these days we have enough television cameras and sports analysts to highlight every indiscretion throughout the games and websites such as these where us fans can voice displeasure at what the commentators tell us is wrong.

How can the Bunker get it wrong with countless angles?
How often has referee boss Graham Annesley apologised for bunker Fark ups?
Well they ask for folk interested in being a ref to step forward but not many do though.
Too many armchair critics

As I said folk have been complaining about match officials ever since organised sport started and in 100 years time if it's not an advanced whiz bang match official systems making the calls them folk will still be complaining about match officials.
One of my favourite sports is baseball and there is always issues with umpiring - ball and strike calls and a lot of heated moments between batters and umpires and managers and umpires over these calls especially in close games and post season play off games/world series
Part of the theatre including the umpires throwing players and managers out of the game.
They have been trialling an automated ball/strike system (ABS) in AAA which is planned to be introduced into the MLB sometime in the near future - The ball/strike call is relayed to a wired-up plate umpire to make the call
Who can the batter or manager complain to about the call - nothing the plate umpire can do about it as they are being relayed the call.
Takes the human element away which some say the bunker is doing and they such as Gus Gould often advocate for less bunker involvement
