  • NRL Commission Dumps McIntyre Finals System (Merged threads)

Just heard on Talkin' Sport the new ARL Independent Commission is to change the Finals series system back to the AFL's system, I think they said it would change this 2012 season! Can anyone enlighten me as to how the AFLers' Finals work?

The Australian Rugby League Commission has announced a change to the 2012 Telstra Premiership Finals Series at today’s NRL Chief Executives’ meeting in Sydney.

On the day of the official season launch, the Commission informed clubs that it had accepted a recommendation to move away from the McIntyre system which had been a part of the Telstra Premiership since 1999.

For the first time since 1996, the competition will split the top four and the bottom four finalists into separate pools in week one of the Telstra Premiership Finals Series (The Australian Rugby League used such a model in both 1995 and 1996).

Whereas the McIntyre system ‘seeded’ the eight finalists so that the top four played the bottom four, the 2012 system will see the top four teams and bottom four teams split into separate pools in the first week.

“As the competition has become closer and the impact of ‘home and away’ finals matches even more significant, the system has become a source of increasing debate,” ARLC Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“The allocation of ‘home venues’ in the second week of the McIntyre system has been a particular concern.

“After going through a thorough process we are confident that this is the right time for this change.”

The recommendation to the Commission follows an extensive review process conducted by ARLC General Manager of Football Operations, Mr Nathan McGuirk.

“Over the past few months we have been conducting a review with clubs and with the recently formed Competition Committee,” Mr McGuirk said.

“An overwhelming majority of clubs have shifted their support away from the McIntyre system and to one where the top four teams play each other in week one.

“It offers greater protection for the top four teams and the possibility of even closer matches.

“Each of the top four teams needs only to win two finals matches to reach the Grand Final, while the bottom four ranked teams must win three.

“The Minor Premiers and Team 2 are each guaranteed two home games.”

The Telstra Premiership finals system will continue to be played on the basis of ‘home city’ venues in week one and two and ‘home region’ venues in week three.

    Much better system IMO.

Teams 1,2,3 and 4 play each other in the first week of the finals and they all get a second chance with the two winners getting the next week off and the two losers playing the winners from the below round.
Teams 5,6,7 and 8 also play each other and the two losers of that round exit the finals and the two winners move on to play the two losers from above.

      Much better system.

      Chook.

Yep. Also the top 4 teams keep home ground advantage in the second week which is much better. I hated in the old system how 7 or 8 could get a win and then get home ground advantage. It happened in 08 to us we had to play in NZ despite finishing 4th.

This system just makes it that bit harder to win from outside the top 4.

About bloody time I say. A much fairer and better system. Teams that finish in the top 4 are rewarded for a good season. Teams that finish in the bottom 4 should not be able to lose a game and still be alive the following week.

So glad they've decided to change. The AFL system is far superior and really rewards those who perform consistently across the year. Their home ground advantage rules also are clearer.

In sum the only disadvantage is that if you're in the bottom half of the draw winning a premiership (or even getting into a GF) is nigh on impossible.

Great decision. Rewards the effort of an entire season, rather than just performing in the back end of it.

Hopefully a sign of many positive decisions to come.

What really annoys me is it was OUR system. They took ours on board. We had it in place before them. The McIntyre System was developed for the AFL.

It was News Limited that wanted the AFL's McIntyre System.

Thank goodness for that. I never ever want to be in the position of having to perform unnatural acts like cheering for the likes of Cronulla again as we had to in 2008 in order to keep our dim hopes alive. I just want to cheer for my team and that's it, just like the olden days.

I think this is much better, that's my view.

                              It's a good thing IMO.

If only for the reason it's the 1st indication of moving away from NewsRLs grip.

This new system is an ARL system that News dumped when they took over the game. Now we are taking it back from the gAyFL, who took it from us leaving News 10yrs behind.

Let's just hope it's the start of some sensible decisions and not just a token gesture.
