NRL betting scam claim: new charge of contacting witness
            Greg Prichard
            March 23, 2011 - 5:35PM
Police from the Casino and Racing Investigation Unit have today laid additional charges against former rugby league player John Elias as part of their continuing inquiry into suspicious betting activity on an NRL game last year.

Shortly after 2pm, Elias, 48, was arrested and charged at Bankstown Police Station with breach of bail, relating to alleged contact made with one of the witnesses in the investigation, and two counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence. It is understood the person contacted was TAB media manager Glenn Munsie.

He was refused bail and will appear in court at Bankstown tomorrow.

Elias has previously been charged with attempting to obtain financial advantage by deception, following the investigation into a highly unusual plunge on a first scoring play option in the Cowboys-Bulldogs game in August.

Following that charge, on March 3, he was conditionally bailed to appear in the Dowing Centre court on April 7.
