  • Doco Watching.

Have seen a couple of bewts lately.

The Trap - Adam Scott - A three part eye opener about how, based on a speculation in the Fifties that all humans are self serving opportunists, successive governments have enacted legislation that has lead to the same situation we had in the late 1800s where the power, money, influence resides with a very select few at the expense of everyone else. History repeating itself.

The Thud Experiment - Based on a lecture from J. D. Laing that proves Psychiatry is 100% hackery and is not based on any discpline or medical fraternity.

The Way of All Flesh - Based on the death of Henrietta Lacks and her cells that have been used for cancer research. Problem is her cells were contaminated and resulted in the last decade of cancer research being a complete and utter waste of time and effort. Compelling viewing.

Inside Natures Giants - Two teams skinned a male Lion and Tiger and looked at their bodies without the skin proving without a doubt the evolution of the two distinct species is only skin deep.

    Anyone got any others?

    Chook.

I'll bite since I'm bored and you and I are such good mates Chook.

One of the best documentaries I have seen recently was "When You're Strange" directed by Tom DeCillo and narrated by Johhny Depp. Probably the best documentary ever made about The Doors and Jim Morrison.

Most interestingly there is a lot of original footage used. Once The Doors had some cash they paid some of their film school friends to document their shows/travels, etc. Some of the footage previouly appeared in Feast of Friends. Best of all is the footage used from Hwy which was a film Morrison had made. He funded it, directed it and played the lead role. Hwy. has rarely seen the light of day and the footage is used brilliantly in When You're Strange. I highly reccomend it.

I'm waiting for one to come out about the backyard fighting circuit in Florida.

The only way some of these guys can get their hands on some money and food is to fight for it.

Some go straight from the backyard to a professional cage.

            It's called 'Dawg Fights'.

You're probably not into that shit but if you've got about 5 minutes spare look up 'Dawg fights trailer' on Youtube.

If nothing else it's worth watching for one of the funniest things I've seen...

                Fair enough.

How about "The Best Hotel on Skid Row" narrated by Charles Bukowski. All joking, piss-taking and name-calling aside, I think you might enjoy it. I would guess it was made in the 70s at some point and documents the lives of some of the unfortunate souls in the Los Angeles skid row area.

I'm a big fan of Charles Bukowski so would also reccomend "Born into This" which is a doco about Charles Bukowski.

If you like Hunter S Thompson there was also a good doco about him. I think it was released in 2011 called Gonzo. Good stuff. There is also another one called Buy The Ticket Take The Ride.

Finally I also watched a doco about the hardcore band Fugazi last week called Instrument. Again very interesting.

All available on youtube or downloadable in torrent form from thepiratebay.org

Deep Water. Unbelievable true story of a weekend sailor who put his business, house etc on the line and entered the first non-stop circumnavigation round the world yacht race in 1968...and very quickly realised he was way out of his depth. He decided to fake his position and sail round in circles for months until the rest of the fleet were almost back home and then join them and cruise to the finish line a hero. That was the plan anyway. Best doco I've seen.

The Derren Brown Experiments that have been on SBS the last few weeks. Well worth watching if you're interested in human behaviour.
