  • Melbourne Cup! 2025

Thought I'd start a thread so you can let us know who your picks/bets/sweeps are for tomorrow's big race.

I think we all mostly bombed last year, with the exception of Crab who was on the winner Knights Choice.

    Will post my thoughts later.

I have kept a lift out from yesterday’s paper and need to go through it to make my not so expert tip. I really have been hopeless tipping the winner in it for years now.

Ok, think I've finalised my picks for the Cup. Will be a wet track unfortunately, rated a Soft7 at present and it looks like Melbourne has had the bulk of its predicted rain. However, more showers are possible right through tomorrow. Depends how much falls at Flemington. Lots of overseas horses, or prev trained overseas presents a challenge!

Top pick - No: 6 ze fwarnch oss Presage Nocturne. Loved his Caufield Cup run, distance no problem and can handle up to soft going. A heavy track could test though. Lovely grey, there's a few in the race. Slight gamble on French trainer/jockey combo taking on the locals, but can be done.

Next best - No: 9 Absurde. Had 2 prev cracks could it be 3rd time lucky? Ran well last year. Think his wily trainer Willie Mullins would have made any corrections from those experiences. Distance/conditions suit. Had a messy checkered run in the Caulfield Cup and still ran well, jockey upgrade here. Warming to him.

Third pick - No: 22 Royal Supremacy. Can the singing irishman Robbie win an unlikely b2b Melb Cup double? His trainer Ciaron Maher thinks so. His confidence is giving me some. Nice light weight, if he stays a strong 2 miles good roughie.

Good luck all, and remember last years result showed anyone can win!

Gotta laugh at More Felons' colours red, green & white..seems apt for our Vermin neighbours.

Arapaho's silks look a bit like a Roosters jersey plus Rachel King is riding, so that's my prediction. I won't be watching live but wish everyone the best of luck for tomorrow..
Here's to a 2026 Bondi Beach postcode premiership

I think I might go for River of Stars. I also like the look of Presage Nocturne and learning the piano I like the term Nocturne but I think River of Stars it is.

My best mate has lived in France for quite a while. I texted him asking his opinion (which I have duly ignored) on Presage Nocturne in the Cup. He thought its overseas form is of a lower grade than some of his rivals tomorrow. His tip? River of Stars...

And RWB...love the More Felons pick up!

              I'll be backing #23. Torranzino @ 30/1 the win.

#3. Arapaho, #5. Chevalier Rose and #21. River of Stars round out my top 4.

I’m keen on River Of Stars and have been since it ran 3rd in the Sydney Cup

Half Yours looks well weighted for a Caulfield Cup winner

Al Riffa has been flying in Ireland Not so much worried about the 59kgs Its more the fact others are carrying a lot less weight

That’s good to know. But no doubt me tipping her will jinx her.

If she is beaten it will have nothing to do with you

Really? I’m shocked. It was a little tongue in cheek comment lol. Just noting that I haven’t tipped a cup winner for over a decade now. But you never know, there’s always an opportunity every year.

I’ve got no idea about the horses because I’m not a punter but because today is such an iconic race I’ll have a guess.
For a place I think barrier 2 and barrier four.

In all my life of watching the Melbourne cup i'm never seen a barrier win or even place, same as every other race I've seen for that matter.

                          Good luck with that.

Hopefully u go better than ur footy tips as u are a royal jinx with that.

Speaking of Royal, i might back that..

That was my pick but then i started watching some so called experts on Youtube basically saying that horse has ADHD and struggles to truly settle during the races. Somehow if the training can settle it, then it might be a chance...i will still have something on it.

So Jaxx, out of interest is there any expert u follow where u get tips or leanings from, or if u do all tips yourself what do u particularly look for in a racehorse to win or place in it's race?

Al Riffa is the obvious class horse in the race, got that from the research i had done. However, it's carrying the top weight of 59kg's and top weights rarely have melb cup winners. Same can be said for favourites, they rarely win i.e 2 from 20 winners so something like that. Carrying the deadly double of both top weight and favoritism...might have to go PLACE only.

Vauban is another class horse but this time it's flying under the radar and not the favourite like last yr etc. Problem is it is 8yrs old...winners historically are around the 4 or 5 yr range...roughly 46 and 45 winners each age group. Also usually winners finish in the top 4 during their last run,,,Vauban finished 13th in it's last run...so maybe PLACE for Vauban as well.

Royal Supremacy was my initial choice so i'll go with that...light weight to carry plus good on a soft track and winning jockey.

                              So 22, 4 and 1.

Maybe i'll pick one more before the race as not very confident with any of these.
