Yeah I had the similar hopes for some of those blokes (Clarke and Shirvo) though I did doubt any of them were going to be a serious contender to win the 100 or 200m. But I thought they would have done better than what eventuate for them their careers in the 100 and 200m.
However, Darren Clarke turned out to be a world class 400m runner, finished 4th in the 400m final in Seoul in 1988. I think one or two of the medallists, who were all from the USA got busted for doping not long after. I think in that final there might have been a couple of sub 44s times which was rare back then. I think Clarke might have run low 44s in that final which was his best ever 400m run.....
IMO Shirvo's thing was that he ran a 10.03 in 1998 which put him in a REALLY good position to make the 100m Olympic final in 2000 (he got ridiculously close to breaking the magic sub-10 barrier, which woulda put him in the conversation as a medal contender back then as sub-10 was much less common).
As somebody who trialled for the 2000 Olympics, he inspired me to do better (as did Cathy Freeman). It was a magical time... it disappoints me that the magic sorta died out after 11/9 as I reckon the lead-up to Y2K was really special. To me Shirvo played a significant role in that story for Australian athletes.

My best was about 10.8.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.
the young bloke didn't fluff his lines and made it to the semi in his first senior world champs. mission accomplished and the pressure is off now and he can just go out there and run like the win. live on nine at 10pm
ran a good race in the semi but not a great race. still, he'd have to be satisfied with his first world champs. a lot of people who know what they're talking about rate him.
jessica hull went on a rollercoaster - finishes last in her 800 heat, appeals for being tripped, succeeds in her appeal, smashes the aus record in the semi and makes the final. good luck to her tonight.
athletics is more interesting than swimming. you can see athletes in their entirety and get a better feel for what' going on

Gout Gout I thought was impressive.
First time up against the elite pros and did well. You can see he is still a skinny young lad without a pre season) up against battle hardened pros with plenty of pre sesasons. I think he will kick on and probably go under 20s next Summer or European Summer.
Jessica Hull wow, sensational 1500m run a few nights before and now with her second chance into the 800m final. Gotta say I feel proud of her as she is from the Illawarra like myself.....

His father confirmed his surname is Guot and I think his first name is Bona ? He'd go alright on the wing for the chooks !
That’s what someone thought about Shane Whereat. They were wrong. Darren Clarke didn’t set the world on fire with the Tigers either.
Apparently they stuffed up the paperwork when Gout’s birth was registered. His first name was not meant to be Gout, but that’s what was registered because his parents didn’t understand what they were filling out.
