  • Is it character building or detrimental??

Having a chat with some mates at the pub and a big topic was is this going to benefit our younger players or will they be scared from it.
Having been so successful the last few years and playing in a winning environment has been great for our young guys but will they be able to mentally get through this tough period?
I'm not just talking about Horrie, Niko and Mitchell but also Evans, Nappa, Liu, Toups, Elliot and SST. All have only ever played first grade in a winning environment.
No doubt that JWH, Cords and Junior coming back will strengthen our side but if we continue to play poorly with them back will it effect the young guys mentioned for the next few years?
    Interesting to hear people's thoughts

Im pretty sure we will be fine if or when we get everyone back on deck. Although winless so far, this season(I thought we would get pumped yesterday) has a feel of 2012 to me in that we are in games but cannot finish them off, That will change when we get the three main players back So if we can get recruitment right in the of season I think we will be in for a very good year next season
I respect all our moderators here. Past present and even future. Always have done and always will do a wonderful job.

Although very frustrating watching the team lose five games in a row, this team of kids should have won against Canberra, Manly and the Warriors. With a little luck, it could have been three from five. I reckon it will benefit the team in the long run, especially when some hard heads get back on the field. C'arn the Roosters!!

Players realise we are down on troops, and their wallets are getting filled every week regardless of the result.

        They will be fine.

Mitchell, Nikorima, Elliott, Hastings, Frei, Vunakece (even Evans!!) - just how many first grade games have these guys played between them? They are all still learning to play the top grade. As long as they have the senior players to give them support and a great coach, it will all be character building for them. We just need to get our 3 senior players back asap to give them and the team a boost. The thing is it's not just that we have 3 senior players off the field at once - it's WHO THEY ARE, JWH is our foward leader, our spiritual leader and the team's enforcer. He is one of the hardest playing fearsome forwards in the whole comp - not just our team!! Boyd Cordner is one of the best back rowers in the game. His work load and work ethic is top level. Pearce, whatever people think of his off field idiocy, is our much needed organiser. He controls our field postion with his long kicking game. This helps our defence to keep the opposition deep in their own end. Pearce's organising frees up Hastings and Niko to do their own thing.

In a weird way I think it will help. It is a lesson to all players - young and experienced - it will teach them that success shouldn't be expected to just happen without a lot of hard work.

This year is going to be a tough year but I am ok with that after the success that we have enjoyed in recent seasons. Next year we will be back flying in the top 4.

So it must also be true that during Robbo's time at the club and the success we have over these years players both young and old must have taken a great deal for granted and never did learn the lessons of what it took to be, and remain successful... present 1, 6 & 7 excluded. Otherwise we wouldn't be focussed on what's going wrong now would we.

Most footy players are dumb and dumb and need constant reminders time and time again of the most basic things.

Agree. So barring our 1,6,7 and JWH, Cords and MP7 we've got SFA in terms of footy nous. Remind me again who is responsible for assembling such a collection of dumb and dumbs...

A lot of the senior guys who have been through some pretty dark times and come out the other end with a premiership - Maubs, Pearce, Friend, SKD, JWH etc . I've got no doubt they are in the best possible environment create this into a positive/charachter building event.

Doubly so if SBW enters the frame shortly. Just his presence off the field would have an enormous impact

What our big 3 bring to the Roosters is what Melbourne's big 3 bring to them & if you take those 3 out of the Storm from rd 1 they would be on zero IMO. If the Cowboys were without Thurston, Scott & Taumalolo from rd 1 they would be doomed. If you took McGuire Thiaday & Milford out of the Broncos from rd 1 they would be farked if you take your top 3 out of any side you will struggle.

IMO it depends how they take it, but it should be character building if they are REALLY first grade players (i.e. have the right mental toughness).

I said it the other day - as a kid, most of the teams I played for (particularly my school) s*cked biiig time and lost every game each year. That's clearly not professional footy, but IMO losing shouldn't get to you, and it constantly challenges you to improve.

A Hayne-style player thrives on his losses. A Milford-style player goes missing for the Raiders for 5+ years then gets hailed as a hero when he plays for a successful team (that constantly protects the halves and gives them unlimited space to wiggle with, and options all over the field even if you eff up). IMO playing it tough shows you who is actually worth their coin - part of why I wanna see Melbourne's 'big 3' split up.
