Ask anyone that has played with or for him and they will tell you Stuart has an exceptional football brain. Sometime his passion gets in the way but he is no idiot.
Agree! Just because you have good players it does not guarantee you a GF win, let alone be 3 GF in a row. Our defense was one of the best the game had seen in 2002. We hadn’t won a Premiership since 75 so much of that credit goes to Ricky and his team for ending that drought.

Sticky was crucial to that 3yr window with the defence so he played a massive role in our success.

But I think everyone is overlooking the THIRTEEN or so seasons since; where he's been atrocious for all bar one or two of those seasons.

He had a gun start to his career - aided by having a genuine genius to lead his team - but his inability to kick on since then is quite damning.

Maybe it hasn't helped that he's coached some poor clubs but the Raiders diabolical halves situation is on him. He's deemed Austin, Sezer and Williams good enough for a few years which is ****ing bonkers and bad coaching imo.

Gould only ever did 2 good thinks for our club and that involved getting Matt Sing and getting Fittler (which is one of the graatest things ever). You could include Stuart but it sounds like you don't want to include him in the great things.

Do you really think Nock would have let Gould get shunted to the outer if he saw value there.

          Amusing but completely ludicrous

Stuart got us to 3 GF in a row. If he’s tactics weren’t up to speed I doubt we would have gotten to one. We may not have been the best team in the 2003 and 2004 GF but we were right in it in those 2. How many other clubs make it to 3...The Storm... any other? By 2005 momentum was lost as it happens to many teams and yes Freddy retiring surely must be considered but Freddy was also there before Stuart took over and the drought continued until everything came together in 2002.
As for the raiders...well they haven’t been much since Meninga, Daley, Stuart and Belcher retired and they will never be anything like that again because I doubt the best players want to go there a freeze their nuts off.

i rewatched a dragons vs roosters game from 04 today ? i think maybe the reason fittler isn't an immortal, is despite his obvious genius he did have very quiet periods in the game, it seemed to me finch did more of the last play options in this particular game some of finches play was ok, but freddy was the obviously the far superior player . i love freddy more then anyone, but it was just an observation i made, i guess in 03/04 he was coming to the endof his career, despite been at the peak of his powers. i still rate him way ahead of lockyer who had the friggin queensland team around him , roosters never missed the finals with freddy there.

in regards to my spelling you are completely correct.
But in regards to Gould we can agree to disagree. I guess I hate the bloke as much as you love him

To be fair he's coached the Sharks, Eels and Raiders so has hardly had quality teams to work with. Also, I'm yet to see us beat the Raiders in Canberra with him as coach (he had us done on the day this year and it was super frustrating to be there!!!)

Not the best coach out there but IMO he goes alright with what he's got (on paper he's got absolutely nothing in terms of talent... only 2 noteworthy players are Papalii and Leilua).

The weather played a significant role in the 03 GF loss. It meant the game became a bash up through the middle of the field and Penrith had a very handy forward pack. When we smashed them in the lead up to the semis, it was out at Penrith on a dry, sunny day and our speed out wide destroyed them. Wet, slippery conditions basically narrow the field by about 10m and makes it easier to defend out wide.

Watched the Manly v Chookies at Loopyland this year at the NRL site... Wow what a performance. A few hiccups which costs us tries like when Toupo decided not to pass to Jake free to fall over the line but Toupo decided to get around Turbo but failed and right at the end when Teddy dropped the ball over the line and Mitchell missed a conversion from in front....Damm! We could have blitzed the record loss for manly there but instead we equaled it to the dogs record set about 14 years ago. Still though it was another indication of the power we had when our boys were on song. We also had Liu, Napa and Aubbo out of that game. Excellent performance!!!!

Cotric and Rapana are good as well but my belief is that there is no winning culture there like there’s at our club. Those days for the raiders are over and I don’t see that they will ever get them back. Our players go into a season with the belief they can be champions while at the raiders it’s all one game at a time and losses might set them back. There is a more positive vibe in our club.

Also Josh Hodgson is the Raiders best player by a mile.

                          A world class hooker.

If Skinny could of outran Sattler and if Crocker would of held onto that pass at the death in 04, maybe we could have won 3 in a row...

Its great that the "classic matches" have been on Foxtel in recent weeks...seen some beauties. Even old Bears, Balmain, Wests and Newtown matches.

Love the old traditional clubs, and the footy back then. No less skill, maybe more. But refereed and coached much differently. Alas.
