Watching "that tackle" again, I think there's a chance that sideline part of the field may have been more heavily affected by the rain than the crossfield path Sattler took, and that Todd just got bogged down. He had every right to assume the best path for him was to take a beeline for that corner right along the sideline. Nobody was more surprised than him when he got caught.

There have been a couple of infamous "villains" in major league baseball that have blown easy plays in big games (eg Bill Buckner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18caPNisP2U), and one case of a Cubs fan (Bartman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq8G81oOHhY) who took an outfield fence flyball away from a fielder then being blamed for a world series loss. Both suffered harassment, death threats and long term misery for themselves and family.

I often wonder how Todd is going these days.

In a nice gesture the Cubs gave Bartman a world series ring after they finally broke their 100 year plus world series drought in 2016.
Haven't heard that one before, lol. Would have scored if not for the stumble after he evaded the earlier tackle. Loved how Freddy hadn't picked the ball up straight away, but waited for Skinny to get into position.

Skinny didn't play in the 2002 GF, but he did play an important role in the lead up to the GF qualifier when we had a couple of backs out.

Reckon he might be backpacking somewhere, reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Good luck to him.

Phil Gould Recommended Sticky not to play Byrne in the GFin 2003 .He will cost ya he said . Goud could be a diick but he said we played our GF the week before against the Bullchocks and were not up to it .There was a massive build up between the two clubs over that game it was the revenge of Bulldogs etc getting booted in 2002 was quite a lot of banter between the bosses and the rest. In somecase Clubheads didnt give a shit about the GF the real game was against the Bullchocks.
      Its true i tell ya...
In reality we shouldve and I thought for sure we would flog Penriff..didnt bother me much that loss...but the Bullchocks loss did ....Still hurting.

The Dogs win was one of the most enjoyable I have experienced. It was clear after the GF that they had peaked the week before.

And yet clubs like Parra and Canberra seem happy to fork out top dollar for him. It’s inexplicable really. His record since Freddy retired is horrid. Made it to the finals only twice in 12 seasons and a win ratio of about 40%

Overconfidence was the problem in 03. They belted Penrith a few weeks before the finals and expected the same to happen in the GF but Penrith stood up to the onslaught and there was no plan B.

2004 was a massive choke. We were the better side but the turnover and mistakes were horrendous.

Bollocks. He did get a good team but he changed the way the game was played. He and his staff created a defense like no one else. He deserves every bit and more of the credit for the success of that era.
And remember he did it with Gould in the background trying to undermine him.

Ask anyone that has played with or for him and they will tell you Stuart has an exceptional football brain. Sometime his passion gets in the way but he is no idiot.

Gould will tell you anything in hindsite, had we won he would have taken credit for Byrne playing. The reason why Penrith won is simply they played 3x better than they actually were. They were an average to good team, but in the finals esp the GF they played so far above their ability it was astounding.

On Byrne people need to watch the whole clip, you will find it was not Sattler that deserves the praise it's another Panthers player that dives last minute and ankle taps him and slows him down. That doesn't happen, Sattler doesn't get within 10m of Byrne

Nah. Gould was running it. It all turned to custard pretty quick when he bailed in 05.

the only thing Gould was running was his own personal agenda. I am reasonably confident he did not bail but was gradually pushed to the outer.

Freddy would’ve been an absolute nightmare to defend against. He had every option at his disposal. Pass short/long, step, run, bump, swerve, kick short/long.. and he was a solid defender.
                        Can we have him back?
                        ..it’ll be interesting to see

Agree with this summation and the fact that Byrne also hesitated slightly during his run. In fact Sattler's tackle and the attention it gets is way out of proportion to the actual tackle. It was a pretty straight forward covering tackle - regulation stuff. I've seen a lot better by Coote, Raper, Reilly and the likes in big matches. Even some of Mini's were classics. But I think the Satts name had a lot to do with this one getting replayed just about every time Sattler, who has cultivated a media career gets mentioned. Good to see you bring this to people's attention Kingbilly.

There is no doubt we peaked the week before with a total smash up of the Dogs and Penrith played at their peak in the conditions. On a fine track I think we win easily. But they did play well that year and took out the minor premiership too. It didn't last as it so often doesn't with the big drinking mountain men.

Yeah gradually pushed to the outer by Stuart who wanted full control and look what happened when he got it. Turned the club into an absolute basket case by 2006. The decade of excellence that Gould engineered (1995 to 2004) turned into a complete farce by 2006 with Stuart in control. Took years to undo the damage.

For me Sticky will always be a Roosters hero for being at the helm during one of the golden ages for the club.

I put the failure of 2005 - 06 down to the difficulty that any team can have in replacing a dominant, champion player (e.g. Johns at Newcastle) and the fact that maybe Stuart was such a hard trainer that the team had nothing more to give (Maguire might be a similar kind of coach).

Stuart was exactly what the team needed in 2002.
Who could forget how he had that lot defending in the 2nd half of the season.
Problem with Stuart as a coach is he burns players out. It must be real hard to maintain the kind of intensity he demanded back then. Every weekend was like another GF.

Excellent clip of highlights of that era btw, even if I dont approve of the thread title. I thought along the same lines as 13.
It's easy to underestimate just how good Mini was in his prime.
                                Pity about Finch..........................Stuarts biggest mistake.
