WHY isn't Jake Friend in the Australian team tonite?

NZ just scored a try...because of a bad attempted tackle by Cook.

Australia not selecting the right team again!

Settle down BB. Cook has been the best hooker this year. Halfway through the season half the people on this sight wanted Friend gone.

I also think Ben Hunt is a solid utility off the bench.
Although he was average tonight, Australia dropped too much ball and got owned by the Kiwi forwards.

Cook is massively overrated. He is fast but his early season form was on the back of penalties and surrender tackles. Once those disappeared so did he. In fact, he was one of the worst on the field in the prelim final.

Jake has a massive turnaround in form and would not have looked out of place in that side.

Raises an interesting talking point though.

Why is the defensive side of a dummy half so undervalued. To the point where people on here couldn't see Friends value and he has now been overlooked for two inferior defenders at representative level in McCullough and Cook.

If the skill sets were reversed and Friend was as good an attacking player as he is currently a defensive player and Cook as good a defensive player as he is currently a attacking player would Cook still be picked?

Why is there such a heavy bias towards attacking ability over defensive ability when history shows us time and time again that defence wins big games.

At worst defence is 50% of the game and should be valued as such.

I was thinking along the same lines as Rooster6 on the points made above as this international unfolded. Cook is dangerous behind a steamrolling Souths pack and it was pretty much the same with NSW overpowering Queensland with a bigger pack too. Quick play the balls and roll forward are essential to the Cook game. He needs marker space to be at his most effective. We definitely missed the cool head of Smith and his slowing down the ruck defense.

A good game manager was missing tonight with Australia back pedalling and Keary's injury sent plans into disarray. Friend picked up his form as the season developed and the Rooster's patterns fell into place. He is the best defensive hooker in the competition and one of the best Roosters of all time in the tackling department. He also reads the ruck very well and is an alert cover defender - right place, right time. Cook was never going to trouble those big Kiwi runners. At times I was wishing for a Radley. But in 'that sort of game' Friend could have been invaluable.

As for Hunt. Surely he must be on limited time. Some of the pass selection from him tonight was hospital stuff. Even Cook served up a few of those too. We need to hot a lot harder and more often in defence to be a chance.

                He's average every week?

What are 3 players from Manly doing in the team?
The brothers have been useless, this year?

                And Cherry-Evans?

Why wasn't Matt Scott in the Australian team?

When NZ scored the winning try Gagai and Tom were nowhere to be seen...123 kms from the sideline they were supposed to be defending.
                Hopeless team.

Yes, and Australia lost as a result.

Jake should of been at least put on the bench his always been a work horse giving a 100%. His defense is outstanding so yes he makes mistakes in attack but never dies trying.
