  • 3 players to undergo Stem Cell Knee Surgery

    Hey Chookpenners;

I just got the 'official' injury report for all of the 2017 roosters including the World Cup Rep players.

Interestingly it states that Cordner and JWH are getting Stem Cell knee surgery "as planned". Now, if you throw in JTeddy we have 3 key 2018 roosters getting This procedure done. I guess they can all share a room at the hospital.

I don't know about you guys, but the offseason is gonna be shyte IMO, taking into account we have Cronk and Teddy needing to get started on developing combinations with the rest of the team.

It's in no way guaranteed that the 3 will be fit for the start of the season. Also, I think keeping Gordon is gonna end up being a great decision for this situation alone.

Anyway, not the best news for the roosters moving forward.

    Thoughts???

The Roosters chief medical officer likened it to an oil change, it's not a big deal and having it done regularly with help their knees long term

Better to have a few weeks off in the off season each than let it get worse

Pee Gee, I hope to put your mind at ease regarding the pre-season!

The players getting stem cell surgery are very experienced campaigners who are used to managing injuries and who will probably benefit from getting off their feet. As well, the combinations might come easier than we think - 2 reasons - the class of guys like Teddy and Cronk who will need to combine and the fact that JWH and Cordner aren't playing key positions from a 'combinations' point of view. And finally, from memory, not all of our 3 big signings for season 2013 had a full pre-season with the club either.

So, if the operation is like an 'oil change' as is being reported on here, I don't think there is too much to worry about. Hope I am right and hope that helps!

An oil change that takes you out of action for a month or so. An oil change generally takes me about 5-10 minutes and it’s a bit like I dunno... doing a pi$$, changing my undies + drinking a gatorade/berocca after a hard night.

I just hope this stem cell shyte isn’’t some snake oil treatment that only certain types of doctors will suggest.

Tedesco NOT having surgery. My mistake. Very senior @sydneyroosters official told me on Friday he was having same as @boydcordner . Obviously a brain freeze - he meant JWH, not Teddy. Still, my mistake. Apologies for the stuff-up.

What they are doing is an arthroscopy and injecting stem cells, you recover pretty quick from an arthroscopy, they probably aren't allowed to stress the joint too early as they want the stem cells to take.
This is still a very experimental procedure.

Perhaps after this procedure, we will see Jared the 2015 God of Thunder return, I bloody hope so.

I think Anthony Tupou had this done a few years back (he may have been the first ?), but long term his knee still forced him to give it away.
                          Perhaps they've improved the procedure since.....hopefully !
