  • Politis confirms Roosters after Cronk

SYDNEY Roosters supremo Nick Politis has vowed to keep Mitchell Pearce at the club until the end of his career despite attempts to sign Cooper Cronk on a two-year, $2 million deal to play halfback.

“I want Mitchell to play here until he’s 35,” Politis told The Sunday Telegraph from Athens.

“There’s no guarantee Cooper Cronk is coming to us but, if he does, it’s not long term.

“Mitchell can learn from him and become an even better player. We’re not going to let him go anywhere.”

With the near certainty Cronk will sign for two years at the Roosters, rival clubs are already preparing to swoop on the NSW State of Origin halfback who faces the prospect of playing off the bench or at hooker.

The Manly Sea Eagles are leading the way, hoping to play Pearce in the halves alongside Daly Cherry-Evans which would allow Blake Green to sign a long-term deal with the Warriors.

The Cronulla Sharks are monitoring the situation, too.

“We rate him,” coach Shane Flanagan said.

“He works his arse off. Maybe he’d be an even better player at a club where it’s not all about him and he’s just one of the team. We’ll see what happens.”

Newcastle coach Nathan Brown has also spoken to his management about making an approach.

Not that Politis sounds prepared to back down.

“He’s got to have faith in us,” Politis said.

“We’ve been through a lot but we stood by him for a decade and we love him.”

Coach Trent Robinson and Politis, who returns from Europe on Sunday night, will meet Cronk and his manager, George Mimis, in the next 48 hours.

The Roosters have already had an NRL clearance to do a deal without breaking the salary cap, although one mid-range player may have to go.

The Roosters were actually under the salary cap last season by about $200,000 which helps their situation.

It allowed them to prepay players some of their 2018 money on the 2017 cap which frees up the extra cash for next season.

Pearce now has to decide in which direction to go.

Does he stay and try to become the complete halfback under Cronk? Or does he demand a release to be assured of playing first grade and keep his NSW jersey?

It remains to be seen how Cronk’s signing would affect the rest of the players.

Robinson and Politis believe he will have a similar influence to the great Sonny Bill Williams, who led the way in changing the Roosters’ culture after years of off-field dramas.

There were more off-field problems this year, with Shaun Kenny-Dowell, Paul Carter, Blake Ferguson and Latrell Mitchell in strife.

Only Ferguson and Mitchell remain at the club.

It remains to be seen if Cronk’s arrival would have an impact on the co-captaincy arrangement between Boyd Cordner and Jake Friend.

He has had far more big-game experience than both of them, having played in seven grand finals for Melbourne, eight State of Origin series for Queensland and 33 Test matches for Australia.

All this talk that Cronk will make Pearce a better halfback - how the hell does that work if Pearce is playing hooker or on the bench? Its a crock.

I hope Cronk doesn’t come. It upsets the balance too much. Trying to convert Pearce to hooker is a risk that won’t necessarily work and putting Pearce or Keary on the bench is stupid. If he’s going to come and Pearce stays then one of those things has to happen and none of them make sense.

        My questions are;

        1) What does it do to team morale?
        2) Does it affect how much we can offer Latrell Mitchell who will no doubt be asking for a pay rise soon & then are we putting at risk losing him?
        3) Does it mean we can no longer afford Chircton who I think in the bigger picture would actually be the more significant signing?
        4) If Mitchell Pearce or Luke Keary fail at dummy half what is our back up plan?
        5) Given Luke keary comes off contract next year where does it leave us with his negotiations in terms of offering him a much deserved pay rise? Can we even afford it? Clubs will obviously target him.
        6) What position does it leave us in to re-sign Cordner, Liu, Manu & Tetevano? Who all come off contract next year.

There's not doubting we're a better team for having Cooper Cronk, but it's a big disruption to a lot of other plans that would've been put in place long term... no doubt.

When was Latrell Mitchell "in strife"?

Even Fergo... his only crime having a few beers 5 days before an Origin.

This is our best chance ever to grab a specialist half back in Cronk to mentor one of our up and coming young players. We need to future proof our team for the time we have no Cronk and Pearce which isn’t far away.

Disgraceful journalism. The same tactic that had all and sundry under the impression that Pearce was a "serial offender" akin to Todd Carney.

What a negative nelly you are? You forgot to include what would happen if the roof came crashing down. If you were to come out with an objective analysis that can be respected, you would have also included the pros...

If the article you pasted here is 100% correct, Politis & Co would have gone through a risk management process like any other business deal... Thank goodness for them...

Didn't Liu and Manu re-sign anyway?

But yes, I have complete faith in Uncle Nick, Robbo and co. Of course they've got a long term plan.

Also, can we stop suggesting that Luke Keary might be moved to hooker? We all saw season 2017. And we all saw that he's probably the most pure and accomplished 5/8 in the comp.

There's as much chance of Napa playing fullback as there is of Keary not being 5/8th. NOT HAPPENING.

That wasn't my analysis of the situation purely posing questions I think make for interesting discussion and haven't really been explored yet on this forum.

And why does my opinion have to be objective to be respected? I've never seen you attack any other member for making posts that are influenced by their personal opinions? Surely that's what makes forums interesting, reading everyone's opinions.

                        Spot on.
I cant see the sense in keeping Pearce on the bench, unhappy and on 800K plus.
                        Cronk in, Pearce out.

Or no Cronk and use the money on a Gillard- Campbell.

Both signed 2 year extensions at the end of 2016 for seasons 2017 & 2018. So both can be approached from November 1 by other clubs.

Hard to dismiss Michael Morgan. He showed just how wide-ranging his skill set actually is this year.

Pearce would just be extra $baggage and after Cronk goes who fills his place?

We wont be re-signing Fergo, Nikorima and Gordon after 2018, so that's means one million dollars comes available for 2019. Re-signings will be ok on Mitchell, manu, cords, etc.
