  • Daily crap SBW one last fitness hurdle

TODAY is D-day for Sydney Roosters' prize signing Sonny Bill Williams, who must pass a final fitness test in order to be green lit to appear in Thursday night's season-opener against South Sydney.

Provided he is cleared, Williams will be welcomed home by a Rabbitohs pack containing Sam Burgess, Michael Crocker and Roy Asotasi.

Aside from tossing a house brick into the middle of Moore Park Rd and telling them to settle it the old fashioned way, could there be a more mouth-watering contest?

Williams sent TV reporters into a frenzy on Friday when he appeared at training with his knee heavily strapped.

On top of the torn pectoral muscle he suffered playing Japanese rugby and his other injury history, it raised concerns about whether the dual international would be available for selection for round one.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson soon set the record straight yesterday, telling The Sunday Telegraph there was no cause for alarm.

"Sonny has had a knee issue for years, there is nothing restrictive about it. It's more precautionary than anything else," Robinson said.

What about his fitness for round one? Is he a lock-in for selection?

"He's got one more test to pass (today) and provided he gets through that we're all very happy with where he's at," Robinson said.

So how will the Roosters use SBW? Will he start? Will he be restricted to playing on the right edge with halfback Mitchell Pearce?

The most likely scenario is Williams will start on the interchange bench and then be brought on to the right edge to combine with Pearce and centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

Being SBW, he will probably also get somewhat of a roaming commission to play what he sees in attack.
