  • Sloppy defence

Waking up this morning and reading some comments online, people are saying "oh it was a good game and it only came down to a 8 points loss" but my concern is even though we lost by "8 points" ... we got "38" bloody points put against us last night.

    That's just unacceptable !

Forget about beating the top teams and all that noise, we've got to fix our defence and stop points being leaked so easily. Some of those tries, etc last night were just soft and of course a result of our own faults/errors but our inability to be consistent and confident with our attack and defence is going to hurt us on the ladder and even more so when we play the top teams.

Not sure what needs to happen but it needs to be addressed asap !

At least 12 of the points conceded can be put down to stupid mistakes (Young and Tedesco).

Another try was conceded while JAS was off the field, so there's another 6 points.

Then we gave away a penalty and Hynes duly kicked the goal.

    That's another 2 points.

All up - they needlessly gave away 20 points.

    38-20 = 18 which is exactly what they conceded in rounds 7, 8, 9 and 10.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

18 points conceded is still not good enough to win a comp though. We need to be better at defending mistakes regardless too but it does hurt when they are easily avoidable ones.

Attack is humming, time to bed down our defence.

Better still, let’s be better at reducing the mistakes, then we don’t have to defend them.

All their tries were off our mistakes or poor defense reads but our tries were all skill. Just we play a too risky style of footy which only comes off once in a while but never against the top teams because their defense is a lot better. I don’t believe Robbo has a real gameplan except a roll the dice style which either comes off or in most cases hands over possession. But when we can’t defend our mistakes then it stuffs up our season.

It's circus round and we were just contributing to the entertainment. It was like 1 big game of backyard footy!

This. My god. If this team completed at 85% it would never lose.

                Yep it is circus round.

Mistake after mistake by us year after year. Such an inconsistent side.

The coach is a strange dude. Creating this false image that we are so different to the other 16 sides is to much: " Roosters style or way " wank wank. It puts so much unnecessary pressure on us and leaves us up for ridicule.

Cut out the stupid mistakes. Shut up. And just run straight and hard.

                GO ROOSTERS.

Young’s defence reads are a worry.

The Dominator is no different in D from other outside backs, and as Big Jack Gibson said, you don't have time for a committee meeting on a football field. It is easy to play the game in the grandstand or sitting on a lounge at home, especially when you can replay what happened and determine what course of action needed to be taken. The old he should have done this or that - Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

51 tries in 59 NRL games for the Dominator - Not bad at all for a player who only started playing league at 16 - 22 now

I still think he would be an option at fullback going forward, especially as there is no guarantee that Manu will be back in the NRL even after the Japan Rugby Stint. NZ Rugby will make a big play for him to sign with one of the NZ Super Rugby Teams.

Of course, but realistically errors are always going to be a part of our game with the style we play. Defensively we need to be better.

I made the below post last year about our improving defence in the run into the finals, so I think there is reason to be optimistic that we can amend our current defensive woes. I think it is worth remembering though that an increased focus on defence will result in a slight drop off in attack so we can’t just expect that we will hold our current attacking form whilst also becoming an elite defensive outfit again. It’s not under 12’s.

I pulled some stats around Points conceded, Run metres conceded, and line breaks conceded and there's a clear correlation between the time they joined the coaching staff full time and our improvement in these areas.

The turnaround has been nothing short of exceptional.
