  • Ron Coote F2F

I enjoyed the interview especially since i hadn’t migrated to Australia in 1972 ( my dad came over in ‘69, but we didn’t join him till ‘74).
I was surprised to hear that it was Politis and Kerry Packer that swayed him to the roosters back then .
Whilst I didn’t fully understand and appreciate the intricacies of league back then, I became a roosters fan from the very first game I watched , which co incidentally was an Easts Vs Souths game .

Ron and his lovely wife gave me my first job at Newtown McDonald’s. He was a hard task master.
They had their main office on the top floor, they also owned Kings Cross and Marrickville.
Newtown was devoted to NRL, he had all sorts of memorabilia, including the team photos of the last 15 GF winners and he was in half of them.
He had a flash new Ford from Uncle Nick. I had the privilege of playing touch footy with him at the end of year Xmas BBQ
The end of year functions were held at Easts leagues.
I remember I did something and ended up copping a serve from Ron, as he walked away I gave him the bird but his wife had just walked around and saw me. She reminded me that he gave me my first job but never said anything to him. I thought I was gone for sure.
Years later when I joined the Navy I would see him on the way to work when passing Kings X, during the Super League wars he was still very involved with Easts. We would always have a chat. I think he had a falling out at Easts or maybe because he moved away I’m not sure. Good to see him still have good things to say.

This reminds me as I also was in the same class as Terry Hill. RIP, I remember when he and Trindell came into Newtown store about 6 months after we finished year 10, they were training with South’s. Terry had bulked up big time, like he was on steroids a massive difference in such a short time.

Most likely because his father Jack played for us in the 30s and he features in team photos alongside Stehr and Brown. Wow.

Ron would have afterwards walked across the Noble Plaza and on to the hallowed SCG turf where he pulled off many covering tackles.

                understand all of that

I was thinking more along the lines that he’s always played things very neutral between easts and souths. Prob roosters more accommodating to fox sports

I've been introduced to him a few times and I've always come away with the opinion he has a soft spot for the Roosters but he's a Souffs man through and through.

Funny that he grew up a Roosters supporter ..I am pretty sure..but for sure I get it he played for souffs for a long time and won plenty of comps.

Neutrality can have its benefits...both sides love you, and in two kingdoms you can *rule*.
