  • Keary to retire

Sydney Roosters star Luke Keary is set to announce his retirement from the NRL at the end of this season.

The 32-year-old three-time premiership-winning playmaker was contracted until the end of 2025, but has decided to call time on his career after 12 seasons in the NRL.

Sydney Roosters star Luke Keary is set to announce his retirement from the NRL.

This masthead can reveal the Roosters have organised a press conference this week to announce he will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old three-time premiership-winning playmaker was contracted until the end of 2025, but has decided to call time on his career after 12 seasons in the NRL.

The decision will cost Keary up to $800,000 in contract earnings from the final year of his deal.

Keary has endured a number of head knocks across the past four seasons and with so much spotlight and debate on concussions, the playmaker has decided to put his health first.

The impending departure of Keary makes the re-signing of halves partner Sam Walker even more of a priority for the Bondi club.

Walker’s contract expires at the end of next season, and there is obvious interest from north of the border for the Queensland Origin-eligible halfback.

Keary will be the fourth major loss from the Roosters’ playing ranks at the end of the season.

They are already preparing for the departures of Joseph Suaali’i and Joseph Manu to rugby union and club legend Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to UK Super League side Hull KR.
    More Coverage

Ipswich-born Keary made his NRL debut for South Sydney in 2013 and was part of their drought-breaking 2014 premiership-winning side.He switched to their bitter rivals the Roosters in 2017, where he partnered Cooper Cronk to back-to-back titles in 2018-19.

Keary’s announcement follows the immediate retirement of Cronulla forward Dale Finucane last week.

    MORE TO COME...

Did so much good for the club. Best of luck to him. I think noone could see him lasting another year after his without it ending very unceremoniously

Pretty selfless of him. Most would play the extra year knowing that they would be out of form. Keary has been brilliant for us. 2018 GF was a masterclass performance. Hope he goes well post-NRL

Wow big news not long after he re signed
I think this is best for both parties for his health as the main part and also the chooks can move on!
well done Luke and congrats on the career - let’s see if we can send him and others on with a premiership
winning the 2 prems with us who could forgot when he single handily guided us to 2018 win when Cronk was injured
does it feel like it will be sandon smith?
tbh it really feels like it is this year or a couple of lean years atm as we are loosing lots and havnt gained much
apart from picking up Marky N
        Loosing for 2025
        Keary - $800k
        Manu - $800k
        jwh - $750k
        Suaali - $750k
there is $3.1ml and some valuable experience
and no word on below yet
        critchon - $700k
        toops - $400k
that’s up to $4.2m of players leaving or not re signed

we are either going on a massive signing spree or upgrading many internally
Manu is the biggest loss and dissapointing one

So that’s close to $3mil we won’t be spending on 4 players next year (Joe,keary,Joey, jwh) be interesting to see what plans they have.

probably extending Walker would be a priority. 5/8 will be the next big question

I think Robbo said a while ago that Sandon Smith was in the succession plan after Keary (as he should be and deserves first crack at the role)

Apparently he also said something along the lines of him being proud that Walker pushed him outta the way in the Dragons game and that it's 'Walker's team'.

I'm just speculating but IMO this might be part of broader messaging to Walker that Teddy/Keary are all class and will not GIVE him the team, he's gotta take it.

Damn I hope we see more of what we did on the weekend.

We used to have empires run by emperors. Then we had kingdoms run by kings.
Now we have countries run by ………
