  • New Competition Table Format

With 3 byes and the confusion this causes with team standings the NRL needs to look at a new competition table format which is based on actual games played/ eliminates points for byes and only takes into account for and against if teams are level on percentages for the games they play against each other.

This table is based on the format the MLB uses for each division in each of the 2 leagues- If the NRL does expand to 20 teams - they need to look at divisions - 4 divisions of 5 teams

Place Team Games Played Wins Losses % Games Behind
    1 Brisbane 17 12 5 .706 0
    2 Penrith 16 11 5 .688 0.5
    3 Canberra 17 11 6 .647 1
    4 Melbourne 16 10 6 .625 1.5
    5 NZ Warriors 17 10 7 .588 2
    6 Cronulla 17 10 7 .588 2
    7 Souths 18 10 8 .556 2.5
    8 Parramatta 17 9 8 .529 3
    9 North Queensland 17 9 8 .529 3
    10 Dolphins 17 8 9 .471 4
    11 Manly 16 7.5 8.5 .469 4
    12 Sydney Roosters 16 7 9 .438 4.5
    12 Gold Coast Titans 16 7 9 .438 4.5
    14 Newcastle 16 6.5 9.5 .406 5
    15 Canterbury 17 6 11 .353 6
    16 St George-Illawarra 17 4 13 .235 8
    17 Wests Tigers 16 3 13 .188 8.5

Percentage - Wins divided by games played as a percentage 1000

NZ Warriors and Cronulla are equal on percentages - NZ Warriors are 5th because they defeated Cronulla in the only game they have played so far - 32-30

Parramatta and North Queensland are also equal on percentages - Parramatta are 8th because they defeated North Queensland 24-16 in the only game they have played so far.

Roosters and Titans are both 12th as they are yet to play each other

Games behind - difference in wins plus difference in losses divided by 2

As per the ladder Brisbane is the current leader with 12 wins / 5 losses and a percentage of .706

The Roosters are on 7 wins and 9 losses and a percentage of .438

Roosters have 5 less wins and 4 more losses than Brisbane - add these together (9) and divide by 2 = 4.5 - Thus the Roosters are 4.5 games behind Brisbane

You can also see how many games in front and or are behind any team is compared to any other team on a week by week basis.

You should submit this to The Roar.

MLB doesn’t have a separate mid-season competition that takes away the best players from clubs and skews premiership results

The ladder isn't confusing at all with bye's etc, probably takes a solid 10sec to work it out

Think this is confusing also KS . Would it not be better to keep what we have but just not give points for the bloody byes.

Plus MLB plays 162 games thus diluting many issues that occur in a league with vastly fewer games.

I agree that the teams getting points for the bye at different times makes it difficult to know exactly where each team stands.
I agree that the points for and against is misleading when teams have played different numbers of games.
It would be simpler if the comp table started with all teams on 6 points
and for and against was expressed as a percentage, as AFL have done for many years.

I don't get why there is any need to give points for a bye .For me that's were the confusion lies .Also. It's shouldn't be that some teams have had 3 byes and some have had one .Surely they can organise a draw better than that

so we're 1.5 wins out of the 8 with a poor differential. sounds about right

3 byes for the season is stupid you have teams who have had 3 byes and others who have 1 bye so far earlier in the season some teams had 2 byes before other teams had their 1st. They need to bring in an 18th team ASAP so we can fix these byes and go with a system where we play each team 1 before everyone has a rest then resume the season

I don't get the points for the bye either nor the uneven way they are spread out and if they do add extra teams it should just go to a play everyone once and shorten the season with a mid season break to condense origin over consecutive weeks.
League is a tough enough sport with so many injuries that dragging it out leads to teams form dipping.
The powers to be would never go for it as they are at the beck and call of the media outlets running the programming but I guarantee it would be a better product.

I believe it should be a 14 team competition with each team playing each other twice and have a mid season break but sadly sport is dictated by money so the NRL pushes more teams for more matches which generates more money from broadcasters. You get rid of South’s, Wests Tigers and Canterbury and you have the perfect competition.
